From September 20 to 21, KMU ACE Festival was held at Bauer Hall. ACE (Advancement for College Education) is supported by the Education Ministry to help education become competitive and develop. The purpose of the festival, which was organized by the Center for Teaching & Learning, was to announce and evaluate the educational outcomes of the ACE project.On the first day, students who had participated in ACE programs such as K-Circle, overseas volunteering, and student exchange programs presented their experiences in the programs. KMU received a presidential citation at the 13th Innovative Technology Competition for developing technology for small and medium companies’ development. Only KMU received the presidential award among the country’s 4-year universities. Also, KMU received 5% of research funding in 2012 to supplement research and to help businesses.Evaluation standards were goal achievement (40), technology (30), the possibilities of utilizing it in real industry (20), and how much a university tries to develop technology to help small and medium companies. The average score of universities was 71.9. KMU got 80.
Jeong Jae-hoon, who is a student of Keimyung University, was the best performer in the Samsung Young Campus Reporter competition. He is a junior in the College of Social Sciences and his major is Consumer Information Science. Samsung Young Campus Reporter is a program where university students selected from the whole country report their own schools’ useful information and local events. Since last year, Jeong has been a member of this program. He has written articles, taken pictures for his articles, and posted them on the Samsung homepage. The 2012 Korean Language and Culture Training Camp were held for three weeks from August 6 to August 24. 170 foreign students from Germany, Japan, France, and the United Kingdom participated in this camp. The students in the camp visited Korea to learn about Korean culture and language. Classes consisted of Korean culture classes such as graded Korean language lessons, hanbok experience, samulnori, taekwondo, traditional crafts, and traditional food of Korea. Also they visited Korean heritage sites such as Gyeongju, Yeongju, and Cheongdo to see historic sites and to experience Korean culture.
For two days from August 17, the Korean-Japanese Economics & Management Association held the 27th International Conference at Euiyang Hall on Keimyung University Seongseo campus. KMU Industrial Development and Business Administration Institute and the Japanese Economics & Management Association supported it. Scholars representing the two countries presented about 40 papers at this symposium whose agenda was globalization and a paradigm shift for the economic growth of Korea and Japan. It had free sessions to seek solutions for stable economic growth such as Glocalization and the Local Economy
Many students participate in extramural activities. They usually do activities by themselves or with a team. One extramural activity is SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise). Most SIFE teams are in capital region universities, and there are few teams in regional universities. In Keimyung University, there aren’t any teams for SIFE yet. The Gazette will introduce SIFE. Kim Seung-jun, who is a graduate of KMU, won the prestigious President’s Award from President Barack Obama. In the U.S.A, 36 Keimyung University students who attended the Global Career School for overseas cultural and corporate experience performed a flash mob dance to promote Dokdo 4 times. They had a flash mob campaign in the Smithsonian Museum, Independence Hall, and South Street Seaport during their busy 11 nights and 12 days program.
