From July 13 to August 24, I went to Australia to study English through the SAP program. The SAP program supports students financially to acquire a cosmopolitan outlook by improving our ability in foreign languages and cultural experience. The program is held during summer vacation and winter vacation by the Office of International Affairs.Language study in Australia gave me many changes. The most remarkable change is the improvement of my English speech. Before I went through the experience, I was so embarrassed that I stammered when confronted with foreigners using English. However, now my m
From July 10 to July 22, I visited Mongolia through the Keimyung University volunteer program. During this period, I got many chances to show my ability as well as to see spectacular landscapes. In order to make my first overseas trip a valuable experience, I had set some goals before going to Mongolia. My goals were to see as many landscapes as possible and meet many Mongolian people in order to understand their culture and compare their culture with Korea, and I wanted to overcome my limits. I knew that the main purpose of visiting Mongolia was to participate in volunteer work to make a park
Norway is located on the far left of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Maybe Koreans are not familiar with Norway. Before going to Norway, I did not know anything about Norway. Actually, Norway was so unfamiliar to me, and my friends asked me, “How about Denmark?” or “How about New Zealand?” When I was in Norway for 6 months, I felt the time fairly raced by. For 6 months, I was able to take some time for introspection and consider what true happiness is for me and what my future goals are.I studied as an exchange student at the BI Norwegian School of Management, which is located in the capital city
“G’day mate! (Good day mate!).” It means “hello” in Australian. You can use it between close friends. I had a great chance of staying in Australia for three weeks in January as I had won the first prize in Kemmy. Kemmy is Keimyung University’s English presentation contest for all freshmen who take Communication English class. The contest, which is held every year, motivates students to put power into improving English. It also provides a trip to study English abroad for 3 weeks. So, I could go to Australia from January 1 to January 23. Before leaving for Australia, I was really worried about h
Last year, I stayed in CLIK (Chinese Language Institute of Keimyung University) House, which is a specialized scholarship dormitory in Myunggyo Residential Complex, to study Chinese every morning and every evening. When I lived there, I had many opportunities to hear about international programs in China. One day, an assistant of CLIK House announced the Confucius Institute Scholarship to BLCU (Beijing Language and Culture University) for a semester. The Confucius Institutes are non-profit educational organizations, devoted to satisfying the Chinese language education needs of people from diff
I’m pretty sure that most Koreans know the word hyvaa hyvaa, which means “good” in Finnish. Yes, it’s from the TV advertisement for Xylitol gum. The ad says, “Finnish people chew Xylitol gum before going to bed to keep their teeth healthy.” Guess what? Finnish people do not chew Xylitol before they go to bed! How do I know? Because I lived there! Yes, I studied in Finland through an exchange student program last spring semester. I had a fantastic time there and would like to share my story. My first day in Finland was on January 3, and it was -20 degrees when I arrived at Helsinki Airport. I h
Each person has his own vague fear of what he or she has never experienced. The African continent is one example of that sort of fear. However, from the moment I came to support a child from Uganda several years ago, I became interested in the African continent, so I decided to go to Africa before my graduation. At that time, I just wanted to experience a place I’d never travelled to and to deliver my love to the African children. While I was planning to go to Kenya during my senior year’s winter vacation and was saving money for the trip, I got information about a scholarship program offered
From June 28 to July 24, I had a chance to experience a new cultural environment and a new country through Keimyung. I chose India because I wanted to have a special experience even though it might have been more comfortable to travel to New York or London.I arrived in Mumbai and then I went to Aurangabad, Ellora, Ajanta, Bhopal, Sanchi, Agra, Varanasi, Delhi and McLeod Ganj. There, I saw various cultures and felt something different. Agra where the Taj Mahal is located, Varanasi where the Ganges River is located, and McLeod Ganj, in which the 14th Dalai-Lama lives, stay in my mind as memorabl
