ABT Universities

The Ministry of Justice has designated twenty universities in the country ABT (Active Brain Tower) universities. ABT universities receive funding from the Ministry of Justice to perform various activities to develop a multicultural society. They will train professional instructors who can be multicultural citizens and develop related study support programs for immigrants in Korea. The ABT universities will also establish centers for multicultural education and graduate schools of immigrant policy in each university.

Originally, fifty eight universities in the country applied for this project. The Ministry of Justice considered the number of foreigners in each province and equal dispersion of universities around the country. After that, it designated the universities that will promote the ABT project. Twenty universities were selected: Keimyung University in Daegu City; Yeungnam University in Gyeongsangbuk-Do; Ewha Womans University, Sookmyung Women’s University, Seoul National University of Education, and Hankook University of Foreign Studies in Seoul; two universities in Busan City; three universities in Gyeonggi-Do; and one university in each of the other provinces. These ABT universities will play an important role in improving understanding of modern multiculturalism.

The Center for Multicultural Education in Keimyung Univerisity will run a number of projects:

◈ A social integration program for training instructors who will help the public to understand multiculturalism.
◈ Seminars about multicultural society, publication of studies on multicultural society, development of teaching materials, and joint research projects
◈ Education and study programs for immigrants, naturalized citizens, and Koreans

Through these projects, the center will try to help people to understand Korea’s new multicultural society. Korean people are not yet accustomed to dealing with foreigners, so it is hoped this center will contribute to their mutual understanding. The center hopes Keimyung students will also be interested in this project.
