Keimyung University provides various welfare services including scholarships, employment courses, and health services. Health services are provided through Student Safety Insurance. However, students are generally less interested in the health services the university provide.
We inquired about Dongsan Hospital's medical benefits for students and compared them with other universities.
● Keimyung University's Health Services
The Student Health Center provides various medical services including first aid treatment in emergencies, health education, medical counseling, vaccinations, diagnosis, physical examinations, and basic medicine for minor illnesses such as colds, stomach aches, and headaches. Dongsan Hospital, which is part of Keimyung University, reduces some medical fees by 20%, but only for LASIK eye surgery and comprehensive medical testing.
Ryu Hyun, a sophomore in the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, said, "Students who are from other cities need to cover living expenses, and medical fees can be another burden. It is inconvenient that Dongsan Hospital doesn't reduce medical fees even though it is a part of KMU." According to student representatives, reducing medical fees is difficult because Dongsan Hospital operates on the income it generates.
● Other Universities' Health Services
Kyungpook National University, Yeungnam University, Daegu Catholic University, and KMU have their own affiliated hospitals in our region. Daegu Catholic University reduces medical fees to their students by 20%. In Kyungpook and Yeungnam Universities, the Student Health Benefits System gives medical services to their students.
● Student Safety Insurance vs. Student Health Benefits System
Keimyung University students pay 20,000 won for Student Safety Insurance when they enter the university. However, Kyungpook and Yeungnam University students pay 20,000 and 15,000 won each semester for their Student Health Benefits System, but they receive more medical services than KMU's Student Safety Insurance.
Kim Yong-il (Department of Philosophy), the head of the Student Affairs Office said, "Our University has Student Safety Insurance and students can benefit in case of an injury sustained while on campus. The Student Health Benefits Systems in other universities give more benefits, but the fees can be a burden for students."
