The figure on the 10,000 won bill, Sejong the Great

King Sejong is widely known as a monarch representing the Joseon Dynasty, fostering scholarship and the arts, and showing deep love for his people. He left remarkable achievements across various fields, including science, technology, arts, culture, and national defense. One of King Sejong’s most significant achievementsisthe creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabrt. In the 15th century, the Joseon Kingdom used Chinese characters, but they were complex and challenging to learn, making reading and writing difficult for the general public. Recognizing the need for a new, accessible writing system, King Sejong established an academic research institution called “Jiphyeonjeon” and collaborated with outstanding scholars to create Hunminjeongeum, the original version of Hangul. Hunminjeongeum was designed to be easy for anyone to learn, enabling the common people to acquire literacy and communicate more freely. Over time, this alphabet became the official writing system of Korea and is known today as Hangul. Hangulserves as a foundational element of the Korean language and culture, and its value isstill recognized today. Another achievement of King Sejong is his encouragement of scientific and technological advancement. He commissioned the creation of the world’s first rain gauge, the Cheugugi, as well as sundials and astronomical devices to measure the positions ofthe sun, moon, and some planets. These inventions improved agriculture, quality of life and were instrumental in advancing Joseon’s scientific technology. Under hisreign,Joseon achieved politicalstability, economic prosperity, and a flourishing ofthe arts and sciences.
