From July 5th to 9th, Keimyung University hosted the Daegu 2024 World University Taekwondo Festival, a prestigious GI-level event where participants could earn Olympic ranking points. Certified by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and sanctioned by World Taekwondo.
The festival was held at Keimyung Univer sity’s Seongseo Campus Gymnasium and at tracted over 1,000 athletes and coaches from 56 countries, including the USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Syria, India, China, Japan, and Brazil. Additionally, more than 700 family members and officials participated, making it a significant event for K-Taekwondo interna tional exchange and emphasizing both sports manship and cultural exchange.
University-level Taekwondo athletes com peted in various disciplines such as sparring and poomsae, making the festival not only a competitive event but also a cultural celebra tion. Elite university athletes and club teams participated in competitions across three divi sions: Division 1 (G1, sparring individual, poomsae), Division 2 (black belt, sparring in dividual and poomsae), and Division 3 (color belt, poomsae).
The opening ceremony on July 5th intro duced athletes from different countries and in cluded a welcoming speech by Keimyung University President Synn Il-hi, who served as the organizing committee chairman. Other distinguished attendees included FISU Presi dent Leonz Eder, FISU Secretary General Eric Saintrond, and World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue.
Keimyung University, known for its robust Taekwondo infrastructure, including the Korea Taekwondo Center, was chosen as the venue for this prestigious event. The university is the only institution in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk re gion with a dedicated Department of Taek wondo and a Taekwondo Center.
