Public Security and Crime Prevention around Sungseo Campus

A rumor that a suspicious man haunts our campus has been spreading recently. A flasher was recorded to have appeared in the fifth and the sixth exits of Keimyung University Subway Station and 6 sexual assaults were reported over 4 months in Shindang-dong. However, due to police patrols over that time, there haven't been any assaults reported in the studio-apartment complex around the campus. On September 7 in Leegok-dong, a sexual assault occurred and the offender was arrested. Accordingly, we need to improve the present condition of public security and crime prevention in and around Keimyung University.

● The security system around the campus
The Sindang Police Office has helped public security and crime prevention in Keimyung University since their opening last April. Nine policemen patrol the area from Seongseo Industrial Complex Station to Gangchang Bridge with 3 patrol cars and 2 motorcycles. They mainly focus on the studio-apartment complexes near the east and south gates of the campus. Ninety percent of the crimes reported were alcohol related with most occurring in the bar area around the east gate.

● The security system on the campus
We don't have any official departments in charge of on-campus security, but temporary guards have been hired. They are each allocated buildings to guard but there are not enough guards to ensure security. The Department of Police Administration is running the Campus Police System which involves freshmen and sophomores patrolling the area from Adams Chapel to the Myunggyo Residential Complex between 18:30 and 22:30. Those hours are not long enough and the patrolled area is too small to ensure our security and provide swift emergency responses.

●Other universities' systems
We can find patrol cars on the campuses of several universities such as Chung-Ang University, Seoul National University, and Hanyang Univeristy. Yeungnam University has a student organization called "Jikimi," which patrols around their campus from 22:00 to 24:30 and is sponsored by workstudy scholarships. Gyeongsan City and Gyeongsan Police Station placed 16 CCTVs in the studio-apartment complex near Yeungnam University which resulted in a 30.9% reduction in the crime rate.
