Why Are We Going to University?

On November 20, a Learning Talk lecture was held in the Multimedia-room on the third floor of New Bauer Hall.

The speaker was Chae Ra-da, a product director for EBS. The topic of the lecture was “Why are we going to university?,” which is the same as her documentary’s name. The six-part documentary was designed to ask Korean youths why they study to get good grades so they can find a job without thinking about what they really want. She said, “Korean students don’t share their thoughts as well as students from other countries. During the past called Open Your Mouth, she insisted that “university study means asking questions.”

In the next part called Open your thoughts, she introduced three professors who encourage students to speak their minds, contrary to most professors who have normally quiet classrooms. In the, question-and-answer period at the end, she listened to students’ stories and suggested solutions.

But she never answered the question about why we are going to university. She said, “It doesn’t have an answer. Don’t be afraid of anything. Just do what you want.”
