Yoon Jae-woo Awarded the ‘Young Scientist Prize’

Professor Yoon Jae-woo in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Keimyung University was chosen as the winner of the ‘Young Scientist Prize’ at the 2011 general meeting of the Japanese Microbial Resources Association.

Professor Yoon received the prize in Japan’s Sapporo convention center at September 8th. He gave a prize lecture on the system of the microorganism Phylum Verrucomicrobia.
The ‘Young Scientist Prize’ was given to only one young scientist under 40 years old who did excellent research. Professor Yoon used the ‘in situ cultivation technique’ in his research. He analyzed biochemical images of Verrucomicrobia that were removed from the ocean. He established the first molecular biology system of the virus in academia.

This research was done in cooperation with the Japan Marine Bio-Technology Laboratory. Since 2006, this research was presented as a thesis 10 times. Academic scholars anticipate that this research will help in the production of industry materials like energy, food and pharmaceuticals.

Professor Yoon Jae-woo said “I am proud of this prize and I will continue to work hard to research this subject.”
