Letters from Readers

Hello, Gazette

I think English is very difficult, so I thought an English newspaper would be very boring. However, one day I received the Keimyung Gazette from a friend. First, I thought this English newspaper was going to make me bored but soon I was attracted to this newspaper’s colorful photos, paintings and the quiz section. Due to lots of pretty pictures, it is easy to read. Most articles are easier to read than I thought. I think this is because student reporters write their articles themselves using easy vocabulary. The article Apart was especially interesting because I also have a part-time job. In addition to reading Apart, I was interested in the camp staff so I searched for them. Unfortunately, there are not many places to search for the camp staff in Daegu. I also love the part that introduces various South Korean tourist attractions, good movies and books. I want to recommend interesting and moving movies and books to KMU students. Every article of every section was good. If there is one thing that I think is regrettable, it is that the foreign Professor’s column is difficult to read. The moment that I saw the foreign Professor’s column I said “Oh my God.” I want the definition of some difficult words listed under the writing. Anyway, the newspaper was so cool!

*What would you do if you were a Gazette reporter?
I would want to introduce the many festivals that occur every season. For example, it's summer now. There are many festivals like the Mud Festival in Boryeong, the Horror Performing Arts Festival in Daegu and so on. I love festivals! Furthermore, I would make a corner where readers can introduce good books and movies. Writing about living theater and musicals is also good! Thank you.

Dear Friend,Gazette

Hello. My name is Park Ji-hyun. I’m a freshman and my major is English Language & Literature. I’m so glad to have an opportunity to contribute to the Gazette. I heard you are doing your best to publish an English newspaper from my friend, who is a member of the Gazette. Since then, I have been reading every issue of the Gazette. I had the experience of working for an English newspaper as a reporter when I was a high school student, and I'm so happy to have an opportunity to write down my opinions again.

In my opinion, the English newspaper is not only providing information but also helping students to study English. Through each article, we can interpret English texts by finding some words we don’t know and further develop our reading comprehension ability. And what’s more, if students who want to study English through the English newspaper can exchange their opinions about articles with one another after reading it, this method can be the best way to improve their English abilities.

So I think it might be better if the Gazette holds a contest to make students compete using their English reading skills or a meeting to share readers’ opinions on the articles in the Gazette. This is similar to Cho-seon Daily, where they hold meetings in which readers meet periodically and exchange their opinions about articles. Like this, I hope that the Gazette will hold a meeting for readers. If you hold the meeting once or twice during a semester, it benefits you, too.

I also think the English newspaper may be read by many foreign students as well as Korean students. So I want you to make a section about Korea. Although it may be short, if you introduce Korean history, landmarks, food and cultural differences, foreign students can read the newspaper with excitement, don’t you think?

I have another suggestion. I want you to make a section like ‘Today’s Expression,’ which introduces sentences that we don't know but native English speakers often use. For example, if you say ‘You have my word,’ people may not understand its meaning -‘I promise you.’ In this way, if you make a section for learning English expressions, readers are not only getting information but also knowledge from the Gazette. It is ‘killing two birds with one stone.’

I always thank you for trying to make a good newspaper. I want to know our school's events or main issues through the Gazette and hope you to develop the newspaper further.
