Industrial Design Students Successful in IDEA

The Department of Industrial Design produced finalists in the International Design Excellence Awards 2011 (IDEA), which is sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). Choi Jee-min, Lee Han-sub, Jin Jun-ho, Choi Jung-ju, Park Mi-rim, and Kim Mee-yeon represented Keimyung.

In IDEA, the judging standards are how innovative the design is, how useful it is to society and the environment, and appearance. These standards are hard to meet.

Lee Han-sub said that he was motivated by a TV documentary. In that documentary, a blind man bought chocolate milk although he wanted to buy white milk. He said he felt sorry and sad for the blind man and the image stayed in his head. Because of that, he invented a Finger Reader. When the device reads a barcode, an ear phone connected to the reader tells the user what it is.

On September 17, the students’ pieces will be unveiled in an exhibition and the awards ceremony will be held in New Orleans, USA.
