Kim Eun-jin, Volunteer Interpreter

Kim Eun-jin (23, freshman, Dept. of Nursing), a volunteer interpreter at the International Clinic in Dongsan Hospital, has helped foreigners who visit Dongsan Hospital since 2009. She helps foreign patients to make a reservation for hospitalization and to find proper medical treatment. The number of foreigners who visit the hospital are about 20 to 30 a day. She works once a week during semester and twice a week during vacation.

She said “I find this volunteer work very rewarding. This is not a duty for me. I experienced a language problem when I was in the States, so I hope that foreigners who do not speak Korean receive proper medical treatment without a language problem.” She also said, “I feel shy when foreigners appreciate me because I just interpreted for them to get medical treatment without problems, but I also felt really great because of that.”

Eun-jin also works as a Korean culture guide in the KAFC (Korean-American Friendship Circle) program which aims at cultural exchange between families in the U.S. Army and families of Korean sponsors living in Daegu. She was a volunteer interpreter at the G20 summit last year, and she is also going to be a volunteer interpreter at the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Championships in August.
