Letters from Readers

The Keimyung Gazette is so nice!

Hello. My name is Ahn Hae-soo. I am a 2nd year undergraduate student majoring in police administration at Keimyung Univerisity. As the Keimyung Gazette – the English language newspaper from Keimyung University - includes meaningful and various kinds of information, I have been enjoying reading it. The language, English, seems to be a must these days when it is the most commonly used language in the world. That’s why we should be exposed to an English-language environment. Through the Keimyung Gazette, I can get the latest school news, and various, meaningful, and funny information in English: scholarship donations from mature students, students’ experiences in overseas volunteers programs etc. In other words, I learn English and gain knowledge from the Gazette, which means I am “killing two birds with one stone.” I hesitate to buy English newspapers on the market because of some reasons. They are more expensive than Korean ones. In addition, they include current world events, analysis and opinions on top stories and so on which I have difficulty understanding. The Gazette, however, appeals to me, providing useful information by Korean professors, native professors, and members of the Gazette. It is a pleasure for me to read it, looking up words in the dictionary and learning about current events in English.

There is one thing that I feel sorry about regarding the Gazette; it is not noticeable to students because of being placed in a Korean newspaper. If it were more noticeable, many more students would have a chance to read it and learn many things from it. I appreciate the effort that all of you, professors and members of the Gazette, make. Thank you.

Dear the Gazette

When I first saw the Keimyung Gazette, I thought it would be really boring. That is because it is written in English, but I changed my mind as I started to read it. Since then, I have been enjoying reading it. I gain meaningful information while learning English by reading the Gazette. I find articles, interviews, and so on in the Gazette interesting, especially an interview with a guy from Sri Lanka which gave me a chance to know about Sri Lanka. After reading the interview, I got to know about the country as well as how to improve my reading skills. I tried the ‘secret method’ that he told us. It WORKED! The section in the Gazette I like the most is the ‘English Study Corner’ where I can learn various English expressions. Last issue, I learned some expressions which are not taught in textbooks. I’d like to have a lot of chances to learn 'Real English’ not ‘Textbook English’ through the Gazette.

There are some reasons why I like the Gazette. First, I can get the latest school news and current events in English which help me to write essays requiring social knowledge and so on. Before reading the Gazette, I tried to read other English-language newspapers such as the Korea Herald and the Times, but they were difficult to understand. At that time, I almost gave up reading English papers. With the Gazette, however, I can easily read and understand what it says. If you want to give up reading English-language newspapers, try reading the Gazette. You’ll gain self-confidence and then feel comfortable with reading English-language newspapers.

In conclusion, I am so pleased to send this letter to the Gazette. I always cheer for the reporters and am thankful for their efforts.
