2009 Keimyung University Top 10 News Stories

The 2009 Keimyung University Top 10 News Stories were selected at the recommendation of 390 members of Keimyung (160 school personnel and 228 students).

1. KMU to Establish College of Pharmacy

On June 29, Keimyung University began preparations to establish a College of Pharmacy and has already secured 100 billion won in financial resources.

2. Keimyung University Selected as HR Development Center

On June 12, Keimyung University was selected as an HRD (Human Resource Development) center for fostering regional industries by the Ministry of Education and Science Technology (MEST). As a result, KMU will receive 4.56 billion won per year for five years.

3. President Synn Il-hi Appointed Italian Honorary Consul

On January 19, President Synn Il-hi received a letter of appointment as the Italian honorary consul to Korea, authorized by the Italian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea, at a special ceremony at the Korean and Italian Association’s ordinary general meeting.

4. Film Shoot on Keimyung University Campus

On February 21, the popular TV drama Boys Over Flowers was filmed on Keimyung University’s campus. In addition to Boys Over Flowers, East of Eden used Keimyung University campus last summer.

5. Prof. Lee Kyu-hyung Awarded Presidential Citation

On August 1, Prof. Lee Kyu-hyung (Dept. of Taekwondo) was invited to the 26th World Taekwondo Championships, and was awarded a presidential citation from U.S. President Barack Obama.

6. First Prize in the 2009 Clio Awards

On May 12, Lee Jae-suk, a graduate of Keimyung University, received the first prize in the 2009 Clio Awards, one of the world’s top three advertising awards, in Las Vegas.7. HRD Center Opening Ceremony

On August 28, in front of the College of Engineering, the HRD center opening ceremony was held. About one hundred people participated, and the center concluded MOUs (Memorandums of Understanding) with five medical enterprises.

8. Giving up Scholarships

Nine Keimyung students contributed 11,941,000 won in scholarships to help other students who are in difficult circumstances.

9. Production of Bio-ethanol Energy

Keimyung University Professor Yoon Kyung-pyo and Kyungpook National University Professor Kim Soon-kwon succeeded in producing recycled resource energy, bio-ethanol, using cornstalks. Owing to this success, it is possible to get cheap and plentiful bio-ethanol energy using non-food agricultural by-products.

10. Anti-Smoking Campaign

On September 16, Keimyung University held a ceremony in front of Dongsan Library. The ceremony was held to designate non-smoking areas within 10 meters of all campus buildings and inside buildings.
