Anti-Smoking Campaign

On September 16, Keimyung University held a ceremony in front of Dongsan Library. The ceremony was held to designate non-smoking areas within 10 meters of all campus buildings and inside buildings.

The event included speeches by Kim Han-soo, director of the president’s office; Yoon Sung-kyu, president of students; Oh Hyun-a, president of female students; and Lee Jung-hee, dean of academic affairs. President Synn Il-hi also gave a speech of encouragement. After the ceremony, volunteers distributed leaflets about the dangers of smoking and gave away car air-fresheners. Signs marking no-smoking areas were also unveiled.

President Synn explained the seriousness of the damage caused by smoking, saying, “Compared to the 13,000 deaths from traffic accidents, the deaths from smoking amount to 30,000 every year.” He added that the aim of the event was to promote the Health Promotion Act, which was revised last April to increase no smoking areas in the country and publicize the problems caused by smoking. In addition, by reducing the number of smokers, Keimyung can contribute to a healthy educational environment and a reduction in carbon emissions.
