Have you ever read any of Jane Austen‘s works? She was a famous female English writer and wrote
Pride & Prejudice, Persuasion and
Sense and Sensibility. She usually wrote about ordinary people's lives at the early period of her writing through her modernistic styles. Jane Austen was single for life and her books are usually full of quiet humor. From the 20th century, her works started to get higher appraisal than when she lived. She usually examined the social life of the higher classes, and marriage, and portrayed them very vividly in her works.
Becoming Jane belongs to the genre of romance, and is based on Jane Austen's real-life story. The main character, Anne Hathaway, reflects Jane Austen, the daughter of a poor church minister in a small town. One day she meets Tom Lefroy; a young Irish trainee lawyer, who visits Hampshire accompanied by her brother. He was handsome and intelligent but poor and arrogant. Contrast to Tom Lefroy, Mr. Wisley is wealthy and honorable. One day Tom and Jane happen to cross verbal swords in the local wood and come to dance in the dancing hall and play cricket game. More and more they come to get closer day by day. For such and such reasons they fall in love and Mr. Wisley proposes to Jane but she chooses to marry Tom Lefroy. After her mother scold Jane because she wants her daughter to put more value on money. One day Tom Lefroy's uncle invites Jane to his house and then, Tom Lefroy's uncle comes to receive a mysterious letter from someone and decides not to accept their marriage. Jane Austen comes to find out that Tom's family depends on him for their living. Instead of choosing love, she decides to break up with him and become a friend with him. As time went by, Tom marries another woman and names his daughter Jane. Jane decided to remain single after finding out his love toward her and becomes the famous writer of
Pride & Prejudice.
The movie shows not only Jane's love but also the phases of the time when Jane Austen lived; women couldn't get jobs and receive any inheritance and the virtue of women was just to marry a good husband. In that time, for women to pursue their dreams was almost impossible but Jane did not give up trying to realize her dream by just remaining as a courageous woman. Although she gave up her love, she didn't give up her writing. These challenges of her life have brought us fantastic, timeless books for us all to enjoy reading.
