Keimyung University is planning to resurrect the tradition of displaying the Bisa Scholarship Board after twenty years’ absence. The board, made from the wood of the paulownia tree, has the carved names of each Keimyung University student who received a Bisa Scholarship since 1979.
The Bisa Scholarship Board used to appear in graduation ceremonies in Keimyung University every year, following its introduction by President Synn Il-hi in 1978. It was modeled on similar boards in famous Ivy League universities. However, the tradition of displaying the board disappeared in the mid 1980s as graduation ceremony schedules varied according to each department. Following the school’s desire to carry on past traditions, the board has been resurrected. It is to be permanently displayed in Dongsan Library lobby.
Most Keimyung students have welcomed the resurrection of this tradition because the display can give them confidence that they can reach their academic goals as their seniors did. Furthermore, Keimyung students believe the display can have a symbolic meaning to them. Whenever library users see the board, they are reminded of the achievements of their seniors. Keimyung University officials also expect that the display can endow Keimyung students with motivation for their academic goals.
