The Best of Keimyung

This year, 1100 more students applied to enter Keimyung University than in 2007, registering a competition rate of 4.61 applicants for every place. This indicates increased recognition of Keimyung's status. However, our students often seem to lack pride in their university. The Gazette chose the topic "The Best of Keimyung to show our students how much the university has to offer.

Beautiful Scenery

What comes into your mind when you think about Keimyung University? Probably it is Keimyung's beautiful campus.

First, the main gate of Keimyung is a structure which brings up the image of ancient Greek pillars. Its construction was completed in 1999 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the opening of Keimyung.

Second, the buildings in Keimyung are constructed with red bricks covered with ivy. Seen from a distance, the buildings create the atmosphere of an American Ivy League university and are a symbol of Keimyung.

Keimyung also has many beautiful roads. One of the most beautiful roads is located beside Hengso Museum. The road is called "metasequoia road." A lot of trees are planted on both sides of the road. Whenever we pass through this road, we feel like we have entered a movie world and became an actor or actress.

Another representative place in Keimyung is Keimyung Hanhakchon (Korean traditional village). Keimyung Hanhakchon covers around 2000 pyeong. A Korean-style house and a village school covers 259 pyeong, and a Korean-style garden, including a pond and an arboretum, makes up the rest.

Last, when we think of dating in Keimyung, we can hit upon Adams Chapel. Adams Chapel, built high on a hill in Seongseo campus, consists of the Chapel Hall and the Grand Lecture Hall, and it has a pipe organ and stained glass inside, creating a solemn atmosphere.

As Keimyung University has such beautiful structures and landscape, the campus has often been used in movies, including Ditto, Nambuk Love, Everybody Has Secrets, Once in a Summer, and My Mighty Princess. Daemyeong campus is also widely known as frequently being used as a shooting place of many dramas: Sandglass (1994), Seoul 1945 (2006), Snow Queen (2006), and The Perfect Neighbor (2007).

In September, an episode of East of Eden, a special drama to commemorate the 47th anniversary by MBC (Munhan Broadcasting Company), was also shot in Keimyung. At that time, many Japanese fans visited Keimyung to see Song Seung-heon, the main actor in East of Eden.

Keimyung's beautiful campus can make you love your university. Keimyung's campus is famous for its beauty, and this contributes not only to publicizing it to the world but also to elevating the pride of Keimyung people.

The Dream Stage, Keimyung Art Center

The opening ceremony of Keimyung Art Center was held on October 9. For its first performance, Keimyung Art Center presented three of the most beloved operas by Giacomo Puccini, one of the greatest Italian operatic composers: Act 1 of Madame Butterfly, Act 3 of La Boheme, and Act 3 of Turandot from October 9 to 11. This special opera performance was the first performance of its kind in a domestic art center. The speed of changing the stage between each act achieved through recently introduced new stage machines (two lifts and four sliding stage wagons), provoked the audience's exclamation.

Keimyung Art Center has 1954 seats (including eighteen seats for the disabled). The number of seats symbolizes the foundation year of Keimyung. The proscenium of the stage is 18 meters wide and 11.5 meters high. The stage floor is made of the best maple wood imported from North America, minimizing sound absorption on the stage. The orchestra pit, which is 18.5 meters wide and 5.2 meters deep, can accommodate 80 people. In addition, fifty four speakers are located around the performance hall.

Kim Wan-joon, General Director of Keimyung Art Center, said, "The center is suited to both performers and the audience. We plan to hold various performances to arouse much interest in the center among the residents of Daegu."

KMU has various global programs. One of KMU's goals is educating students who have openness to the world. According to this aim, Keimyung University is trying to make more international programs and develop existing programs. Some of the global programs in Keimyung are KIC (Keimyung International College), EMU (Eastern Michigan University), and FISEP (Fashion & International Specialist Education Program).

KIC aims to cultivate workers who have global minds. In KIC, there are FIS (Faculty of International Study) and FIT (Faculty of Information Technology).
