The Good, the Bad, and the Weird

Presenting a prospective vision of a genre of western-style movies made in Korea, the Good, the Bad, and the Weird, shown at the 61st Cannes International Film Festival in May, received a great public favor. The audience gave a high rating to this movie because it pursued the harmony of both eastern and western style movies. Within eight days of the release, the number of box office sales reached three million and twenty four days after the release the number reached six million, recorded as the picture of proven box office in this year.

Director Kim Jee-woon has made various genres of movie, such as black comedy, horror, sport, and noir until now. He has always tried to make new genres of movies and, at this time, he chose a western-style movie. The whole production cost of this movie was only about 200 hundred million Won, using Korean skills only. Considering the scale of this movie, it was made low-budget, even though this movie employed a high degree of hardship of action scenes, the production cost was comparatively much lower compared with that of Hollywood movies using similar action scenes.

In this way, this movie showed an energetic western style movie of Korea we had hardly ever met, and this has a significant meaning itself. However, there is another criticism toward this movie in spite of the spectacular and dramatic scenes, for the reason that the story is too simple. There is also a contradictory view toward the criticism that the simplicity of the story rather creates the thrill of the movie without breaking or disturbing the flow of movie and it can make viewers more absorbed in the movie.

The story of three villains chasing one another to get a treasure map in the background of Manchuria during the 1930s will present you with the pleasure and thrill you may have felt through only western movies. Watching this western-style movie made in Korea will be a memorable and enjoyable experience for sure.
