Musical, The Last Empress




The musical, the Last Empress, is an original work about the Joseon Dynasty’s last Empress Min’s life story and it was produced to look back on the memory of her.

The Last Empress has attracted over 920,000 people since it was premiered in 1995. Further, just 2 years later, when it was successfully performed in Broadway, every foreign spectator gave a high rating to it. The Last Empress was the first successful work in introducing oriental musical to other countries, so the performance has a significant meaning in itself.

Empress Min’s life began when she got married to Emperor Gojong at the age of 16 and became the empress. Even though she was very young at that time, she actively participated in national affairs and played an initiative role. In addition, as a reasonable person, she struggled to modernize the country at a time of political chaos in the Joseon Dynasty when Japan’s colonial plan to rule the Korean peninsula was in progress. To defend her country from Japan, Empress Min stays in the palace until the very moment that a samurai comes and kills her with a sword.

Musical The Last Empress has its own unique and special attractions which are enough to get a good reputation within and outside the country. For example, not only the well-prepared stage equipment but also 600 costumes that fill up the whole stage and the exquisite musical harmony of Korean traditional melodies and the orchestra is pleasing to the viewers’ ears.

On October 17 to 19 the musical, The Last Empress, is going to be on the splendid stage of Daegu Keimyung Art Center.
