Have you ever heard that Keimyung University has a special dormitory which is for English speakers only? KELI House is the one. Hello~ my name is Kim, Jin Myoung, a student representative of KELI House. This is my sixth semester in KELI House. Therefore, I know the advantages of KELI House well. I am going to introduce what KELI House is first and then explain what kinds of advantages you can get.
First, KELI House is an acronym of Keimyung English Language Institute. It is a scholarship program for freshmen who got a good score in the English part on their entrance exam. Those who live in KELI House have to take 8 or more credits a semester. The classes are all performed by native professors in English. Students can live there for two years maximum (I am an exception to that rule because I had started to live there before they changed the rule), and if they finish the two year courses and get more than 750 on the TOEIC test, they will get a Certificate of English from the school.
Additionally, there are so many advantages that people can get. For example, people can improve their English skills. First of all, people who live in KELI House have to speak only English in the building. At the beginning of the semester people deposit 50,000 won, and every time they get caught breaking the "No speaking in Korean" policy are deducted 5,000 won from their deposit. Therefore, it makes us feel like we are in an English speaking country. Also, we must take 8 classes, which are run only in English, a week (2 in the morning, 6 at night) level by level. The classes consist of debating, writing, reading, and popular culture. Therefore, people can study many different parts of English with native speakers.
Furthermore, KELI House encourages us to study, and provides a comfortable studying environment. For example, it gives us some special periods when people can concentrate on their school studies during mid and final term. Moreover, if people can't understand what they are studying, especially related to English, they can always ask the professors. Also, there are many classrooms where people can study whenever they want. KELI House also provides heating and cooling systems so they can study more efficiently.
Moreover, people can make not only Korean friends, but also many foreign friends who come from various countries. Every semester about 30 exchange students come and study with us. If somebody wants to share a room with an exchange student, he/she can apply for that before the semester starts. If they are chosen, they have a great opportunity to share a room with a foreigner. Also, KELI House offers many chances for students to get along and become familiar with each other. It has KELI mini Olympics, and celebrates some Western holidays such as Easter and Thanksgiving.
Some people might say they don't have enough time to focus on studying both their majors and KELI classes, and it seems to be true. However, people can also take advantage of it. They can learn how to manage the time and use their day as efficiently as possible.
There will be a chance for you to join this program at the beginning of the fall semester because it usually opens up spaces for sophomores and juniors. This is a really valuable opportunity! Do not be late applying to be a Kelian. You will have a great time if you become one of us.
