My Hometown

My hometown Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province. But I heard that not everyone know Hangzhou. And I think it is a good place for everyone to travel. I want to introduce it to everyone. Because most of foreigners just know Shanghai and Beijing .Due to the huge of China, there has a lot of special place and things. So now I will introduce one of the good place Hangzhou to everyone. Let more and more people know the good place.

Hangzhou is one of the most important tourism cities of China, famous for it’s natural beauty, historical and cultural heritages. The widely expressed Chinese proverb, "in heaven there is paradise and on earth there are Hangzhou and Suzhou" combined with the words of Marco Polo who described this place as, "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world" have helped to make Hangzhou one of the biggest tourist attractions in the entire country.

Fortunately, while any city would struggle to live up to a reputation as "paradise", Hangzhou makes a good stab at it. Despite the crowds, hoards of tour groups and the idyllic preconceptions one might have before arrival, it is hard not to like this city. Even the most cynical traveler will appreciate the West Lake for its space and beauty, if nothing else.

Hangzhou is a city with a rich history and culture, spanning back over 2000 years. The city first made a name for itself in the sixth century, when the Grand Canal opened up and linked the area to other centers of trade such as Suzhou. The Song dynasty helped to make Hangzhou famous when they moved the imperial family here in the 12th Century. With its inviting views and outstanding scenery, the West Lake soon became popular with numerous artists, poets and painters seeking inspiration in this little bit of "paradise".

Today, Hangzhou (the capital of Zhejiang province) has a population of 6.11 million. The "West Lake" provides the idyllic image of Hangzhou that most people leave with. This huge circular fresh water lake, covering 3km from north to south and 3kms from east to west, is surrounded by hills on three sides and the city on the fourth. Two picture- postcard causeways cross the lake and three islands float in the middle. There are numerous historical relics and sights scattered about the Lake, including the famous Buddhist temple, Lingyin Temple. You can see many of Hangzhou's sights in a couple of days. However, this is a nice place to relax and do some good walking and eating so if possible, plan to spend at least a few days here.

Most visitors to Hangzhou come from Shanghai, and the stark contrast between the two cities is incredible. Hangzhou can get very busy but the sheer size of the area around the West Lake, means that it is always possible to find a bit of peace and quiet. The air and the water feel refreshingly clean here too, and a day or two spent walking around the lake, the tea plantations and the surrounding hills should blow away any cobwebs, leaving you feeling refreshed and recharged.

Hangzhou, an ancient city of culture and arts, has long attracted masses to its attractive, suburban-like center. Nowadays the city is bustling with tour groups and travelers, while it continues to proclaim its name as one of China's paradises on earth. Along with the crowds, thankfully, comes major tourism investment so that today Hangzhou is filled with well kept sights and a prosperous, friendly populace. The city is rapidly changing into a high-rise metropolis, but the sights in the southwest of the city and on the outskirts are all a million imaginary miles from this modernization.

It is a must for any would be tourists to the city to visit Hangzhou's famous West Lake, which is the symbol of the city and crammed full of interesting sights. Known throughout China as the most beautiful of lakes, the West Lake is a great place to wander, or boat, around and can easily take up a day or more of your time. Beyond simply meandering about, the best trip to be taken here is by boat to the Xiaoying Island and the Three Pools, which has its own mini lakes and islands within its confines. In the northwest corner of the lake is Solitary Island, the largest of its kind, offering you the best view of the entire lake and on which the Xiling Seal Society is the place to see Hangzhou's artists at work. Beyond these two sights there is a vast array of further things to do here, most impressive being the Huagang Fish Pool, the Mausoleum of Yue Fei and the Su Causeway.

Aside from the lake, probably the most famous attraction is the Lingyin Temple, a huge Buddhist sanctuary that takes at least half a day to see. A little out from the city center is also the Longjing Tea Plantation, the birth place producing arguably the most well-known tea in China, and a place covered in hundreds of teabushes. If you just plan to have a cup of this tea, however, you are better off heading to the Tiger Running Spring, one of the nicest parks in Hangzhou which is filled with teahouses and pavilions.

As one of East China's best tourist destinations, Hangzhou exerts a magnetic force on people, old and young, domestic or foreign. Consequently, it is strongly advised that you go there in autumn or winter, when there are fewer travelers.

Hangzhou is yet another Chinese "shopping paradise". The city offers a superb collection of local crafts, rare arts and other souvenirs.

Some typical Hangzhou specialties and souvenirs: Hangzhou Silk, Hangzhou Embroidery, West Lake Silk Umbrellas, Tianzhu Bamboo Chopsticks, as well as White Chrysanthemum Tea and world-famous Longjing Tea.

One great place to souvenir shop in Hangzhou is the market that opens every evening on Wushan Road. Here you can avoid the high prices at Hangzhou's many tourist shops. Bargaining is not only recommended, it is required! Bargain hard and you will go home with some great deals.

Also, Hangzhou has a great outdoor silk market called the China Silk City (Zhongguo Sichou Cheng) on Fengqi Lu that runs for two blocks.

This market street is long! Most of the silk is artificial (real is too expensive for most people), but most of the stalls will have some real silk.

If you are looking for something indoors and without the stress of bargaining, explore stores like the Hangzhou Friendship Store or the shops along Jiefang Road or Yan'an Road.
