Dimi-SH

The Gazette recently met KMU foreign student, Dimi-SH. His father is Italian and his mother is Iranian. He can speak five languages: English, Iranian, Italian, Turkish, and Korean. He graduated from KMU with a Bachelor of ETrade in 2006 and then entered the Department of Electronics Engineering to study more. He is a junior now. He is also a Live TBC Today TV reporter. Let's meet him.

1. What do you think about Korea?

I think Korea is a very secure country. When I first came here, I stayed at a hotel in Seoul. At midnight, I went outside to buy beers and I saw some juveniles walking around the street. I was really astounded by that situation. When I was a child in Italy, I couldn’t go outside after 10 p.m. because there were many problems at night like kidnappings, drugs, and gunfire. Therefore, most children should go home before 10 p.m. I also lived in Iran. Iran is better than Italy but it’s also dangerous if you walk the streets alone at night.

2. What is your favorite place in Korea?

Jeju Island is my favorite place. I love Jeju Island. I’ve been there five times already. I like its natural environment and I enjoy swimming in the ocean. The most impressive sight was Halla Mountain covered with snow.

3. How did you become a Live TBC Today reporter? Do you enjoy your broadcasting job?

A program writer called Keimyung University’s Office of International Affairs to find foreigners who could speak Korean well. They recommended me. After an interview with the writers, I became a reporter. I like my broadcasting life. It’s a good chance for me to learn about Korea. I know many good places in Daegu through my work, but broadcasting life also has its difficulties. It takes away most of my free time and since Live TBC Today is a live program, I should practice a lot to ensure I don’t make mistakes.

4. What do you think about university life in Korea?

First, there are so many various amusement centers near the campus. One day, I counted with my friend how many amusement centers there were. We counted PC rooms, beer bars, and singing rooms, near KMU’s East Gate. We counted about 300 amusement centers. I was very surprised. I’ve been to many countries but I haven’t seen any places like that. Second, many students study TOEIC in the library all day to get a high score for their job. even saw a person who was memorizing TOEIC questions and answers. They can get a high score, but most of them can’t speak English fluently. A TOEIC score is not the same as a person’s real English skill. Therefore, I think decreasing TOEIC studying time and studying to obtain various qualifications is more profitable. Finally, the public official boom is also distressing. Most students want to be public officials because that is a very stable job, but I want them to get a job that they really want to do. Life is a challenge. Have confidence in your future and try hard. Then, you can get better results.

5. What are your plans for the future?

Now, I’m studying, broadcasting, and also working on robot design at a company. I want to work in that advanced area. The world is fair. We reap what we sow. Therefore, I’ll do my best for my glorious future.
