Cebu the Queen City of the South

I come from Philippines a country that composes of more than 7000 islands. But I particularly live in Cebu or better known as the Queen City of the South, the second largest City in Philippines. Cebu is known to be the source of the best mangoes and the best guitars.

Cebu is actually the first Spanish settlement in the country, the Spaniard conquered the natives and Christianize them in 1521. Since then, people in Cebu are the most devoted Catholic Christians in the country. You can find lots of Spanish heritage such as the old Port San Pedro and old Spanish houses and churches. Even the language is mixed with Spanish.

People from Cebu are called Cebuano including myself and the hospitality of the Cebuanos is one of the assets which my town can offer. Cebuano usually speaks three to five languages, basically we speak Bisaya, Tagalog, English and some can speak languages from other islands as well. Actually Philippines have 111 languages not to mention the so called “satori.”

Cebuanos are the hardest to please; when it comes to musical performances. It is often said that when a band becomes famous in Cebu; it will surely be popular in any other part of the country. Cebuanos are not generous with applause and only applaud with “gusto” means “like” for performers that we think deserve our applause. Otherwise, it's just the cricket sound that you're gonna hear. Cebuanos are gifted musicians, singers or great boxers. Usually, when someone meets a Cebuano; it is not surprising to hear this; “So, you must play a mean guitar.” But not for me (laughing) I can only play a few cords and that’s it.

Cebuanos worship the Saint; Santo Nino and every 3rd Sunday of January, the “Sinulog Festival” is commemorated. Each year, the fiesta becomes more lavish and commercialized. For locals, it’s a long weekend of non-stop street parties. A lot of tourists go to Cebu to be a part of this street dancing festival. Traditionally, this festival is celebrated in remembrance of the Christianization of the Cebuanos.

Cebu is like Miami of the Philippines. All-year round, except during typhoons; the city is usually sunny and hot; at times, it is hotter than other parts of the country. So, we usually wear light clothes especially during summer. Cebu has a more laid-back lifestyle and enjoys the advantage of having beaches only 30 minutes away from the city. It has the perfect combination of the cosmopolitan life and the beach relaxation that most people are looking for.

There are lots of amenities that Cebu can offer, defending in your choice. You can enjoy the night disco parties and live bands concert in the uptown area or enjoy shopping in big malls in downtown area. Ayala Center and SM malls are the favorite shopping destination for both locals and foreign shoppers.

Foods are great; you will enjoy from mouth watering traditional Cebuano foods to Spanish and Chinese combination menus. Western, Korean, and Japanese foods are also commonly found in Cebu. We have the so called “sutukil” menu in Cebu which is fresh seafood. Cebu is also known for “lechon” a whole roasted pig that will be prepared in all occasions.

I wouldn’t say Cebu is 100% safe. In every society, there are bad and opportunist people. So, if you’ll have a chance to visit Cebu, I would say “enjoy with caution” and you’ll be fine. Well, I leave the rest for you to experience it when you go to Cebu.
