New freshmen enter Keimyung University annually. They need some help to get to know Keimyung University. That is why we have students guides, called EeKkeumi in Korean. These guides help freshmen and transfer students get information and guide them around the campus. I interviewed Jeong Yeon-chul, the leader of the students guides and a junior from the Faculty of Tourism Management Information System.
Q. Could you introduce the freshmen guides?
We help new students enter university. We belong to Admission Affairs, and we started in April, 2005. Now we have four members and we are going to have new members. We are different from ARIMI, which is a student volunteer group that publicizes Keimyung University. ARIMI is in charge of public relations, while we focus especially on students entering Keimyung for the first time.
Q. What do you usually do?
We work both online and offline. Online, we run the Keimyung Space on Cyworld (
http://Best-KMU.cyworld.com) and a Naver Café (
http://cafe.naver.com/bestkmu). Offline, we generally counsel students who want to know about Keimyung University on the phone. We provide opportunities for new students to meet and we run a program called "School Attack" that involves us visiting high schools to encourage students before the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). We receive applications for Keimnyung and we let the students know if they have been accepted. We also hold events for prospective high school students.
Q. Could you tell me more about your online work?
We usually run the Keimyung Space in Cyworld Café. It has lots of information and pictures about Keimyung University and helps applicants, undergraduates, and graduates to meet each other. Keimyung Space has about fifteen thousand members. It is the largest Korean university Internet cafe. There are several interesting sections: KMU Q&A, Best Member, K-Up, KMU Meeting, KMU Programs, KMU People, and School Attack's pictures. In KMU Q&A, applicants ask questions and undergraduates answer them. In Best Member, the most active person is chosen as the best member by poll. In K-UP, students can share information on major studies. In KMU Meeting, students can meet new friends online. KMU Programs introduces many useful programs with pictures including the Exchange Student Program, Overseas Volunteers Corps, and Overseas Culture Reporting Program.
Q. What kind of activities do you do offline?
We hold regular meetings about once every three months to see people who we have talked with online. As time goes by, more people join the meetings. On average, about 100 people join a year. Other university students envy the big size of the meetings. Recently, we had a meeting in February and are planning to have a meeting in May. At the Open University for High School Students, a program to give opportunities to experience university classes, we introduced the campus and helped them find classrooms. We prepared a presentation to publicize Keimyung University to high school students.
Q. What are important qualifications to be a guide?
We welcome anyone who loves Keimyung University. Above all, showing your willingness and enthusiasm is the most important part. We prefer kind and active people. The selection process includes a document review and a face to face interview.
Q. When do you feel most proud of being a guide?
I feel very happy to see Keimyung people who were high school students when I met them. It's so nice to hear "thank you" from them.
Q. Are there any difficulties?
Well, we make many good suggestions to the administration and try to make them happen. Sometimes it takes time to get the suggestions put into practice. However, we are happy when good results come about.
