Challenge is My Life, Kim Ju-bum

What was the most challenging moment of your life? Challenge is a very important thing to do. We will meet one man who is very challenging. The Gazette interviewed Kim Ju-bum, the 37th General Student Council president of KMU, who graduated from the Department of Public Administration in 2002. Now he is an assemblyman of Dalseo-gu and the youngest assemblyman in Korea.

1. How did you become an assemblyman of Dalseo-gu?
To tell the truth, I wanted to study film in university. However, my family opposed studying film. Therefore, I entered KMU's Department of Public Administration. However, I got more and more interest in public administration by studying it. I ran for the May 31 local election and won with a "special campaign." Finally, I became the youngest assemblyman in Korea.

2. You hit the headlines with your "special campaign." What was that?
When I was a candidate, most of my competitors were older than me. Therefore, I thought, "Let's do a different campaign from theirs. I will give a fresh and powerful sensation to people." I used an electric car on my campaign. It was small and convenient for moving. The electric car was also eco-friendly. Above all, I was satisfied with saving gas expenses. My project was successful. People liked the electric car. Finally, my campaign was on the air as a "special campaign."

3. I've heard that you had a special campaign when you were the 37th General Student Council president of KMU.
At that time, I started a campaign, "Conscience Bicycle." That campaign started with 600 bicycles. Students who needed bicycles borrowed and returned them freely. However, that campaign failed in most colleges. Most of the bicycles disappeared. However, the College of Business Administration still goes with the "Conscience Bicycle" campaign in which they ask students to present their student identity card. I'm very proud of that.

4. What was the most challenging moment of your life?
After graduation from KMU, I started to study film in Seoul Institute of the Arts in 2002 and was chosen as the 41st General Student Council president. I think that was the most challenging time in my life. It was not easy to decide to go to another college after graduating from university but I did. I also participated in the production of films as a production manager. I produced several movies: Duelist, The Bow, and Les Formidables. In Les Formidables, I acted as a taxi driver. Now I am an assemblyman, and I can't keep working on films. However, I am still interested in films.

5. What are your plans for the future?
First, I will study more than now and try to get familiar with the residents. Now I work to improve the conditions of social welfare. I will do my best, keeping in mind that the basic and the most important thing of social welfare is to spend citizen's taxes usefully. Another plan is to get a forklift truck license this year.

6. Would you please give some advice to KMU students?
First, be proud of being Keimyung people. You are one of the representatives of KMU. KMU's alumni's relationship is weaker than other universities. We need to revitalize the alumni association and love each other. Second, enjoy your campus life. Take part in various clubs and events. You are young and have power. If you just concentrate on your studies, you can lose many things and may feel regret when you remember your campus life in the future. Third, make your own goals and try to achieve your own goals constantly. Don't be afraid of challenge. Challenge cultivates your confidence. Meet many people and get various experiences. Then you can adapt yourself to social life easily. Finally, try to live freely. Someone with a liberal soul can be happy.
