The musical the Phantom of the Opera is based on the French detective novel writer Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom of the Opera. The musical was written by British composer Andrew L. Webber. It was first performed in 1986, in the London Majestic Theatre and translated in to more than15 languages, and performed in over 145 cities in 27 countries. This musical broke the musical Cats’s record, with more than 7486 performances, and became the superlative run musical in 2006. It is still breaking its own record and showing its fame every day.
The musical starts with and auction at an old opera house. An old man successfully bid on a music box with a monkey doll. Soon a chandelier falls from the ceiling and the music starts; then the scene changes to an opera house in Paris in 1861.
It is widely regarded as the most loved musical around the world. It’s half-brother like musical is the Phantom (composed by Maury Yeston) which was first performed in Seoul and recently performed at Keimyung Art Center. These two musicals are based on the same novel, and seems to be a great success in Korea. I hope you to watch both of them and understands the back ground of the character “Phantom”
