The Value of Experience

I had a chance to visit Washington, D.C., and New York in the USA thanks to my major’s global experience learning program for two weeks from January 26 to February 9, 2014. I felt so excited about my first visit to a foreign country. Also, I thought it is helpful for self-improvement to visit a developed country and experience a new culture. I visited lots of American companies and got three memorable experiences.

First, the convention class that I had in the Hyatt Hotel was the most interesting to me because the convention system is really similar to Korea. I already learned some parts of convention in my major. Therefore, it was easy to understand the course and there were many amazing and useful convention businesses in the USA.

Second, I visited the Hilton Hotel. I looked around the hotel with my friends and an American employee. The employee explained about the Hilton Hotel, the rooms, and the restaurant. The employee was great because he looked really eager and responsible for his job. Furthermore, I saw a Korean employee at the front desk. She listened to the guests’ complaints and solved them rapidly and accurately. After I saw that, I thought that I want to be like the employee. Furthermore, I thought I will try to become a worker in the Hilton Hotel, work hard, and be a helpful worker.

Third, out of the three main global economic organizations, I went to two organizations: the World Bank and the IMF. When I entered the place, the security was really strict. The inspector searched my body and bags and observed me all the time. I felt I was a movie star. This experience was unbelievable to me. Before arriving in America, I didn’t know how these organizations work, but the workers gave us a lecture to help us understand the organizations’ systems. I was proud of the Korean workers and I got motivation to study English harder than ever before thanks to these visits to the IMF, the World Bank, and the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.

In America, I tried steadily to talk with foreigners. My English speaking skill was not that good, but I made a sentence with all the English words that I know. In particular, the moment that I used public transportation was a big chance to communicate with foreigners. Even though some people think my behavior was reckless, it made me adventurous and courageous. Also, it motivated me to think about my dream and future. Therefore, during the period that I stayed in USA, I continuously asked myself “What is my dream?” “What do I want to become in the future?” and “Why do I keep studying?”
