Geographic Information System Expert

Have you ever been to somewhere you don’t know by car? At that time, you might have used navigation. Navigation contains much information about traffic routes to help people to find their way comfortably. The person who makes the local information that navigation uses is a geographic information system (GIS) expert.

Work
A GIS expert is a person that works with geographic information systems to help people find the quickest way or avoid the complicated road. In addition, a GIS expert records geographic information like road views or street pictures in geographic information systems such as Google Earth or Naver Map. Furthermore, a GIS expert searches where a certain building or mountain is located. With these data, they construct a database. GIS experts provide advice and services for consumers who use GIS. They construct a basic system to fit a consumer’s requirements.

Qualifications
It is better to major in environmental information engineering or geology to become a GIS expert. People who don’t major in environmental information engineering or geology can work as GIS experts if they have knowledge of geography and computers. To be a GIS expert, national certifications are required, an applied geology certificate or a geology and ground technologies certificate. The exam for the applied geology certificate is held three times a year, and the exam for the geology and ground technologies certificate is held twice a year. People have to pass a written exam and a practical exam to get a certification. GIS experts must also have lots of knowledge how to deal with a data of 3 dimensional coordinate.

Prospects
GIS is used in various fields. For example, we can use it in freight transportation, aircraft navigation, agriculture, railroads, and of course navigation for automobiles. Therefore, geographic information systems are becoming more important than before. New routes and buildings are updated every day. GIS experts have a big role in updating new information. In addition, some companies use geographic information for their business. For instance, which is a big company selling yogurt and healthy beverages nationwide, has used GIS since 2001. After changing their maps from paper to GIS, they were able to save time delivering their products and promote efficiency. Like this, demand for GIS experts is increasing not only in the geology field but in the business field.
