Diverse Ocean Attractions in Dangjin

Regardless of sex or age, autumn makes people think more. Scientifically it is the effect of interbrain’s nucleus. To give you some time to think, it looks like a good idea for us to take a trip to the quiet western sea of Korea around Dangjin. Dangjin-si is located in Chungcheongnam-do above Taean-gu. Although designated as si, or city, it looks more like a mixture of countryside and city since a 20 minute drive can get you to farmland from the shopping district.
Dangjin has various sea features such as mud flats, reed fields and the distinctive difference of low tide and high tide. Because of the various water environments, Dangjin has many activities in the ocean as well as many other activities that you can enjoy.

The first place to introduce is Hamsang Park in Sapgyoho. Hamsang Park has unique attractions, such as an aircraft carrier and a destroyer that are permanently anchored. Those ships were remodeled to exhibit the history and culture of the Navy and Marine Corps and to teach people about life inside a ship. You can see notes, journals and bedrooms as well as the kitchen and barber’s room, which provide you with opportunities to feel what it’s like to live on a ship. Also naval equipment like landing vehicles, aircrafts and warship guns are displayed to offer you some uncommon sights.

The next destination is Waemok Village, which is about an hour by car from Sapgyocheon. Waemok Village was named after its distinctive terrain. When the side of Waemok Village is viewed from the sea, the narrow land of the seashore looks like the neck of a heron, Waemok in Korean. Due to this regional feature, the land of Dangjin juts up toward the north like a peninsula which provides Waemok Village with a sunrise and sunset as it is in the East Sea.

Following Daeho Tide Embankment from Waemok Village, you can find Dobido. Dobido used to be an island. However, it was connected to the mainland during construction of the embankment. Dobido is very popular with fishermen. Through pedestal fishing, you can catch fish like red sea bream, rockfish, and gray mullet. If you want to do a fun activity other than fishing, you can take a ship to Nanjido, a nearby island. People named the island Nanji, or orchid and grass, but those plants don’t live on Nanjido, so many assume that the harsh current around Nanjido is the source for the meaning of Nanji. The Nanjido area includes Daenanjido, Sonanjido as well as 2 more inhabited islands and 4 uninhabited islands. In this region, you can go to the Ocean Experience School, where you can explore the wetlands by canoe or kayak. You can also pick up sea animals like Manila clams, oysters, crabs, and barnacles by trekking along the mud flats of Dangjin.

The dialect of Chungcheong Province is quite slow, representative of the quiet, peaceful nature of the region; the loudest noise encountered during the trip was the sound of seagulls. Dangjin possesses diverse sea environments as well as good facilities for fun sea activities. It is also a perfect place to go when it is time for you to think.
