The Traditional Festival before Marriage

One night, some sounds broke a calm neighborhood. A group of men shouted and repeated, "Buy the wedding box. Today it’s on sale." The wedding box, called a "ham," contains lots of important and great presents for marriage. The ham was sent by the groom’s family or friends to the bride’s family before the wedding. The ham shows the appreciation for the marriage by both families. In addition, it symbolizes hope that there will be a happy married life between the groom and bride. This ceremony is a traditional festival.

The ceremony happens at night. There is a man who plays an important role in the ceremony. The ham carrier, "hamjigi," is supposed to be one of the groom’s relatives who has sons and a happy married life. It is hoped that the bride and groom can also have a happy married life like him. The hamjigi wears a dry squid on his face in order to hide his social position and identity while he does ridiculous acts.He makes noises by frolicking and joking. He and a group of the bride’s friends make funny jokes that let the neighborhood know about and be interested in the marriage.

When they arrive at the bride’s house, the bride’s family comes out and greets them; however, they don’t give the bride’s family the ham easily. They ask that extra money be given for drinking and food by saying, "I walked such a long way that I can’t move any more. I can’t go one step forward because I don’t have any traveling expenses." They act like they deserve to be treated. If the bride’s family doesn’t give enough, they don’t receive the ham. If 10,000 won is given, he goes forward only one step. After proper negotiations between the carrier and bride’s family, the carrier puts the ham down. They then celebrate the marriage sincerely. They have a good time with the bride’s family and neighbors for the rest of the night, and then go back home. It shows our humanity when we get together and congratulate each other. That’s why the marriage festival is for the whole neighborhood.

The ham includes several items for the marriage. The main items are the wedding present, the paper for engagement, red and blue fabrics, and five grains. The wedding present includes jewelry for marriage such as earrings, a necklace, an ornamental hairpin, and a ring. The marriage ceremony paper is a letter of thanks from the groom’s parents to the bride’s parents for giving them their beautiful daughter. The fabrics are prepared in two colors: red and blue. The red fabric is covered with blue paper and bound with red yarn, and the blue fabric is covered with red paper and bound with blue yarn. The bride’s mother carries the ham into a room and takes out the fabrics. If she picks up the red fabric with the blue paper, it is said that the bride is likely to have a son. Lastly, there are the five grains. The cottonseeds in a pink bag represent a wish for children and a happy family. The red beans in a red bag are for rejecting misfortune and evil. The beans in a yellow bag mean that the bride is good. The glutinous rice in a blue bag represents hope that the bride and groom will grow old together. A piece of wood in a green bag represents hope for good luck in the future.

Today this traditional marriage ceremony is maintained. That is, our mind to celebrate it continues. However, some people have misunderstood that the expensive present is the most important thing. The most important thing is not a gift, but heartfelt appreciation for the bride and groom.
