For a long time, education has been most important and every country has tried hard to teach their children to be fit for society. Also, students can learn about society and citizenship in their school days. While they get education in school, they grow up to be members of their country. However, schools aren’t educational centers anymore. School has become more violent and students can’t study with an easy mind. Lots of accidents occur because of increasing school violence. Many people think that fights between children are a necessary evil that makes children stronger. However, these are not just childish fights between friends. They can receive criminal penalties. Moreover, we can easily hear about adults who joined in school violence or school gangs becoming members of gangs. We should not cover up these things. We have to think about it more seriously.

According to statistics from the National Police Agency, the number of students who were arrested for school violence from 2008 to 2010 was 25,000. The police said that school violence has become tougher than before and it has increased. It shows us that school violence is a big social problem nowadays. In addition, 17.2% of Korean students answered that they have experienced school violence in research conducted in February by the National Police Agency. The most frequent case of violence was verbal abuse and the second one was physical abuse. Moreover, it ruined many students’ lives. Some students killed themselves due to school violence in 2012. For example, one high school student in Daegu jumped to his death from the roof of the apartment where he lived. He was bullied by his friends for a long time. Finally, he took his own life because of lots of stress from bullying. Also, one student of a girls’ high school in Daejeon killed herself in February because of bullying by her schoolmates.

School violence is no longer a childish thing. It is a big problem in our society. The National Police Agency and education offices have tried hard to decrease school violence and protect students from the danger of violence. The police opened a call center 117 which students can use to report school violence easily. With this call center, police can help students who suffer from bullying and school violence more easily than before. Also, local education offices have held many events to decrease school violence and to prevent it. For example, recently Gyeong-gi education office announced that they plan to hold a healing camp for victims of school violence in August. Each local education office has made a Wee Center which helps both perpetrators and victims to have better school lives and social experiences. After their efforts, students have gotten better school lives and are protected from school violence.

The government has tried hard to help students to become good citizens. Violence can easily be decreased. Students should change their attitude. With help, they can make happy school lives. If students also try hard to decrease school violence, we can make a happier and better educational environment.
