Oeguyujanggak Uigwe

Recently, the Oeguyujanggak Uigwe (a collection of ancient royal books) was returned from France. The Korean government has negotiated with France for 20 years for its return.

1. What is the Uigwe?
The Uigwe is the record that contains the main events of the Joseon Dynasty with drawing and prose.

2. History
Park Byung Seon, a bibliographer, found the Oeguyujanggak Uigwe, which had been stolen by the French army in 1866, at the National Library of France. Korea asked for the return of the Uigwe, and finally it was returned and is now in Korea. However, it is under a 5-year renewing lease from the French Government.

3. Contents of the Uigwe
1) Kingly authority and statecraft.
2) Occasions for state celebration.
3) Funerals for royal family members.
4) Memorials and remembrance.

The Oeguyujanggak Uigwe was registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World in 2007 for its rarity and historical significance. With these records, the Korean tradition maintains and progresses. We have to be proud of the Oeguyujanggak Uigwe and be interested in Korean cultural assets.
