Letters from Readers

The Gazette gave me courage

Hello! Nice to meet you. I’m Bae Hyun-na. This year I will be a sophomore and I am majoring in American Studies at Keimyung University. Through this corner, I will share my experiences with you.

Initially, if I heard about an English newspaper from someone, I just felt that English newspapers are very hard and they give me a headache. The reason for reading an English newspaper is just for my studying with an English dictionary. In fact, I knew there were English newspapers in Keimyung University, but I never considered reading them.
One day, a friend suggested, "Read the Gazette newspaper! This changes your thinking!" So I read it, and now I recommend it to other Keimyung students. When I first pick it up, I'm really at a loss. However, before I knew it, I read all of it and solved the puzzle in it. Also, the corner introduces many attractions in Korea that I have never visited, which was very interesting. In addition, the King-Konglish comic explains vocabulary that many Koreans often get confused about. King-Kong is so cute!
Furthermore, the Gazette contains lots of easy vocabulary and interesting topics. I think it is so good. These days, I can not wait for the next issue of the newspaper.

After reading the Gazette, I think Keimyung University students should read this too and it will be good if we learn English through the Gazette in a study group. Also, if someone fears English newspapers, it will be good for you. My only advice to the Gazette would to be to incorporate more corners in which readers can participate in. KMU also needs to better advertise the Gazette.

Through the Gazette, I have been able to reduce my repulsion regarding English newspapers. Thank you for your help.

About the Cover Story of issue No. 144

First of all, I am glad to get a chance to make a contribution to The Keimyung Gazette. I am Jeong Nam-geun, a reporter from Andong National University. Thanks to the DACEP, a meeting of the universities in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daegu, I could get this opportunity. After reading the cover story of the last issue, I decided to write personal comments here.

The theme of the cover story, in my opinion, was good because the change on the internet due to social works is important with the appearance of the smart phone and also it is a topic that should be dealt with. Although I agreed with the contents of the article in general, something small caught my eyes. However, these things are not mistakes but instead the difference between their views and my own.

I was surprised by all the colored pages in the Gazette because we have only two pages colored in ANU. So, we usually focus on the design of the pages. Besides, the cover story is the core of the issue. ANU emphasizes that. However, with the Gazette I could hardly find out which article is the cover story because its banner was so small. Although the Gazette might think they are balancing all the articles and all articles are important, I think if there is an emphasis on the main one then it is easier to recognize and concentrate on the newspaper. Also, the words, “Social Network Service”, in the first picture have an advantage that doesn’t make readers’ eyes exhausted, but in my opinion clearer colors are more suited to the words.

However, it is so interesting that they separated the major social services into four groups and added students’ opinions and pictures of the main services. Most of all, the Gazette has a lot of sections which connect with students, and so this is the best strong point they have.
