The Future of Korean Women’s Soccer

Many Korean men enjoy sports, especially soccer. The men’s soccer team is popular and influential. Soccer players like Park Ji-sung have become super stars in Korea. However, the women’s soccer team doesn’t get fans’ interest. Many female soccer players play soccer in a bad environment. However, the Korean women’s soccer team made a miracle.

The press highly praised the young women who won the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Many netizens wrote good comments about them because women’s soccer was an unpopular sport, and they practiced in a poor environment without the public’s attention. However, they beat the other favorites.

Only 345 players from high school could participate in the U-17 World Cup. Only 1450 women soccer players are in Korea. Just 21 players are chosen for the national team. Two thirds of people don’t even know about the WK League (Korean Women’s Soccer League). After the World Cup finished, the WK League started on September 30. The spectators who came to watch the game were just 400. If we do not count the players’ families, acquaintances and supporters, the true fans who wanted to watch the game are just about one hundred people. To support the women’s soccer team, we should show interest in the WK League.

Local governments and education offices support women’s soccer teams because of winning the U-17 World Cup. The government of Gangneung City supports elementary, middle and high schools organizing women’s soccer teams by giving 20 million won in aid. Moreover, they are planning to make male soccer players teachers for high school students for one day.

The coach of the Korean women’s national soccer team said that Korean women’s soccer will do well for ten years thanks to the great players now. However, to keep our team’s reputation after 10 years, players should practice in a better environment and need constant interest from fans.
