Letters from Readers

Pride and Prejudice

A few years ago there was a movie titled ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ It was a love story. During the movie, two people misunderstood each other because of their prejudices. However, after learning to swallow their pride and remove their prejudice, they find true love at last. How many chances are we missing in life because of meaningless pride and prejudice? There must be a lot.

Many KMU students, including me, have prejudice toward the Gazette in that the newspaper must be very difficult because it is written in English. KMU students are generally not familiar with English newspapers. Articles written in English could make the readers feel intimidated. Lots of students do not even know of the Gazette. Some of them might never have heard of it even by the time they graduate. It’s probably because the paper has not been well promoted or subscribers are not interested in English newspapers because they feel that the English Gazette will be too difficult, uninformative, and boring.

The Gazette is not published by professional journalists, but by normal undergraduate students in their early to mid twenties. So, the words are not too difficult and the sentences are simple enough to understand. It is a good newspaper that students can easily enjoy. However, some people have too pride to read it. They think it is not worth spending a few minutes reading it. In my opinion, the articles in the newspaper are not low-quality. It has a lot of valuable information for undergraduate students.

Therefore, I advise you to read it without any pride and prejudice. You might find a ‘turning point’ in this.

My friend the Gazette!

Nice to meet you, Gazette! I'm In-hye Jang, a sophomore majoring in the department of psychology at Keimyung university. I am one of the enthusiastic readers of the Gazette. I used to enjoy reading English newspapers and journals, like Time and Herald before discovering the Gazette. The articles of the other magazines and newspapers, however, are so difficult to read, and so I almost gave up reading in English.

One day, when I was walking down to the Social Sciences building, I saw a newsstand which displayed the English newspaper, The Keimyung Gazette. I picked up the newspaper and read all of the articles in one day. The articles written by the students were very interesting and easy to understand compared with Time and Herald.

While I was reading the Gazette, I could not take my eyes off from it and realized that this is the paper I was looking for. This is my first impression of you, Gazette! Since that time, I have become a devoted reader of you.

I read the last article dealing with an environmental issue, ‘Save The Earth.’ At that time, I planned to participate in a student camp named ACUCA as a facilitator so I was really interested in the environmental issues in Asian countries.

Therefore, I read that article very carefully and got some useful information about the issue related to the environment that I wanted to know. Before I read the article, I didn’t know that there are many organizations established for the environment. The articles of the Gazette make me think about topics that I had never before thought about.

Thank you, Gazette. I strongly recommend my friend, the Gazette, to some students who want to try to read English magazines or newspapers.
