Student-Support Programs

Last May, our university was chosen for the Project to Strengthen University Education. The project is operated by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and our university got funding of five billion one hundred and twenty eight million won. Since last semester, our university has been operating various support programs for students, and in this cover story, the Gazette wants to introduce the programs that students can participate in this semester.

● Academic and Career Planning
This program helps students to know their vocational aptitudes and find a job through counseling. The program offers resume advice from experts, personal guidance for interviews, and job counseling. It also provides a test of personality and aptitude, and students can check and print the results easily on the Web site. ● Empowerment Program
This program provides systematic and specific education for finding a job. The Empowerment Camp offers support for study groups, a special lecture, mentoring, and an on-line video interview clinic. The Empowerment Camp is in operation from May to November. For three days and two nights, students can experience writing a resume, a 1:1 interview clinic, a lecture about interviews, and a mock interview in front of a large enterprise’s personnel officer. All students can apply for this camp, but the program is divided into two groups, low and high grades.
Also, there is support to make study groups related to finding a job. Students can make study groups which have a maximum number of 10 students. At the end of semester, students submit their activity reports and the reports are examined by each college. After that, students can get support money. Another program is special lectures by alumni who got a job recently. By sharing their experiences through lectures, students can strengthen their competitiveness for finding a job. There is also an on-line video interview clinic. With an interview machine, students can practice a simulated interview. Then, the machine sends the simulated interview video to experts. ● Strengthening IT Capability
This program offers classes related to IT certification. Students can have chances to find a job by getting computer certifications. The International certification courses are Microsoft Office Specialist and International Computer Driving License. The Korean courses are Industrial Engineer Office Automation, Engineer Information Processing, and Adobe Photoshop Graphic Technology Qualification (first level). Students selected for this program can get fifty percent of the education fee and twenty percent of the application fee. If students attend classes and get the certification, they can get back the education fee and the application money. ● Global Career School
This program gives student a chance to visit big overseas construction firms. By visiting the companies, students can experience each enterprise’s management philosophy. Using that experience, students can make a career road map by themselves. They can visit Japan and China, and the period is six days and five nights. Also, job consultant experts and the Job Placement Office’s counselors go with students and help and give comments to students. ● Female Students Career Development



This program offers helpful tips to female students who are preparing to get a job. The Customer Satisfaction Trainer Course provides lectures about service attitude, business manner, and strategies to get a job. What is interesting is there are twenty percent male students in this program.
In addition, there are many programs such as Hospital Coordinator, Flight Attendant Experience Class, and Airline Ground Staff Education program. ● Keimyung Learning Community (KLC)
KLC consists of student groups studying the same themes like languages or getting certificates. Each team is composed of 5 to 7 students regardless of students’ grade. KLC selects 400 teams each semester, and one student can join only one group. A selected team should study more than 10 times during semester. After meeting, the teams have to submit a final result and a report about studying. There is a professor for each group to help and lead the study group. The activities of KLC in the first period are finishing on September 30, and the second period activities will be conducted from October 1 to December 31. The support is 400 thousand won per team including 100 thousand won for the professor. ● Project for Developing Learning Ability
This is a program for juniors or seniors to develop their ability and their creativity. A team is composed with 2 to 4 students and a professor. The project continues for 6 months under the professor’s direction. During the studying period, each team has to hold a number of presentations outlining their progress and also a final presentation of their results. ● Developing Learning Portfolios
This is a program to strengthen learning ability and develop competitiveness for getting a job by developing learning portfolios to arrange students’ learning history and specs. A learning portfolio is a collection of data showing students’ learning style and their progress, so it is a compilation of learning. Keimyung Center for Teaching and Learning (KCTL) selects 300 students at the beginning of a semester and provides a kit which includes a guide book, binder, and office supplies to develop their portfolios. Each student is supported with 100 thousand won. The selected students have to build their portfolios during the semester and submit them to KCTL on the 3rd floor of the New Bauer Hall. ● Overseas Voluntary Service



This is a program to develop K-star students, who are superior students representing Keimyung University, and to provide them with an opportunity to acquire international experience through overseas voluntary service. The program has been conducted since 2002, and the number of selected students has been increased. The applicants are selected by evaluating their scores, awards in contest exhibits, prizes, volunteer and college activities, certificates, official foreign language grades, and a letter of self-introduction. ● Korean-American Internship and Mutual Exchange Project
The existing internship programs have required a lot of money from students, so many students couldn’t participate. However, this project got much supporting money to raise the participation rate and to cultivate students who have international sense by providing opportunities to have international experience. There are many programs such as the Korean-American WEST (Work, English, Study, and Travel) International Internship and the Taekwondo Intern Master Program. The Taekwondo Intern Master is a program to teach taekwondo in another country and to raise future masters. After finishing an internship program, the participants have to make a presentation and submit a report about it. ● Exchange Students Program
This is a program to provide opportunities for students to get a job at international companies through the International Student Exchange Program and SAP (Study Abroad Program). The number of selected students is 130 (50 students in SAP, 70 mutual exchange students, and 10 visiting exchange students). The support fund is 4 million won per person for SAP, 2.5 million won for mutual exchange students, and 3.5 million won for visiting exchange students. ● Program to Strengthen Self-Directed Learning
This is a program to develop students’ learning ability and career development, and to vitalize communication between students by participation in domestic and international contests. The number of team members is more than three, but it can be changeable. The team is selected by evaluating applicants’ application forms and their plans. Applicants have to submit application documents to the Project to Strengthen University Education Team (301 in the Main Administration Building). ● Program for Cultural Experience
This is a program to get international experience through visiting international organizations, multinational corporations, government branches, local governments, and universities with subjects related to the applicants’ majors. The countries are 3 countries in Asia, 5 Asian countries adjacent to Europe, and other countries not in Asia. The applicants have to stay in the countries for more than 7 days during summer vacation. Students applying for the program should have official foreign language test scores like TOEIC and more than 3.0 GPA (Grade Point Average). The applicants can choose an individual visit or a team visit. The applicants are selected by evaluating their plans, grades, and language abilities.
