Strengthening of American Entry Requirements

Pro

At Christmas, a bomb blast occurred on a flight from Nigeria to Detroit. However, the attempt failed and the suspect was injured. After this accident, America started to tighten up flight security.

To prevent terrorist acts, seven regulations were strengthened. First, they established barricades at the entrance of every airport to prevent car bomb blasts and produced special waste cans to withstand explosions. They also compare passenger lists to the terrorist list to see if passengers have the same name as a terrorist, and security guards watch passengers’ behavior while they are at airport security. Airport security is to be equipped with a state of the art system which can scan the inside of a bag. They scan passengers’ bodies through a full body scanner, which can detect explosive substances. After passing airport security processes, explosive-detection dogs wait to search passengers’ baggage and carry-on luggage once again.

Using full body scanners has become a serious issue because this matter can infringe on human rights. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of America already started to take some steps to make up for the weak points in the matter. First, the scanner users work in a room separate from airport security, so they don’t come face to face with passengers. The staff who operate the full body scanner can’t see the scanned image. The images of passengers’ faces and their private parts are not visible to the readers with the parts just seen as white. In addition, they changed the software to delete files immediately if nothing is wrong, and the staff in charge of the work cannot download, copy, or print the image. Lastly, passengers can refuse the scanning, but in this case, airport security guards search the passengers.

As America strengthens immigration procedures, people complain about immigration procedures taking a long time and the infringement on human rights. However, the most important thing we need to think of is the safety of citizens. Regrettable loss of lives like 9.11 will not happen because of such strengthened procedures.

On January 5, the American government announced a strengthening of immigration procedures for visitors to America, which aroused much backlash internationally. Full-body scanners are to be installed, and they announced a list of state-sponsors of terrorism. The reason for this strengthened policy is a series of terrorist occurrences in the U. S. Because of this announcement in the U. S. A., many other countries also started to strengthen their immigration procedures, for example, England, Australia, Germany, and Canada.

The previous immigration procedures were just interviewing and finger printing in airports. However, the new examination adds a full-body scanner inspection through which the past system’s incapability of finding hidden explosives can be overcome. The drawback of the scanner is it not only checks people’s belongings but also shows body shape, so it can affect human rights. Accordingly, each nation, including America, said they changed the software so that officials can’t see a person’s body shape. America also said if passengers don’t want to be checked by a full-body scanner, they can go through the usual formalities, like using a metal detector. Nevertheless, many people wonder whether the scanner, which costs two and a half million dollars, can help detect terrorists. According to the Independent newspaper in the UK, this scanner can’t distinguish between powder, liquid chemicals, and thin plastic goods.

In addition, passengers coming from a nation supporting terrorism must be searched and their belongings must pass special tests. Countries on the list said their nations were regarded as dangerous, which they insisted was unrighteous.

As globalization spreads, movement between nations is increasing, but entering other nations is now more complicated. When the screening process becomes complex, going abroad is inconvenient. On January 27, a plan to introduce full-body scanners in Incheon International Airport came out and caused controversy. I worry about the installation of scanners, which have a lot of problems, so I disagree with their use.
