Many candidates for the university entrance examination complain that they are confused because of the transition period between returning to a department system and abolishing the present faculty system. The original purpose of selecting a faculty system was to lower the barriers between departments and to educate students so that they can have global abilities in many fields. However, a faculty system has brought about students’ complaints. Here, the Gazette describes the merits a department system has.
Compared to a faculty system, a department system provides students with an opportunity to study their majors from their freshman year, and relieves students of the difficulties they encounter when they start to study their major from their sophomore year.
In addition, a faculty system just allots students to a department in alphabetical order when they enter school. They belong to each department temporarily before they choose their department. Under this circumstance, students cannot help feeling alienated because they belong to departments they may not want. However, in the case of a department system, it is far better for them to feel a sense of belonging because there are many department classmates or seniors around them and they can pursue the same study purpose.
Finally, there can be many risks such as the increasing competition for popular departments among students. It naturally means a number of students can’t enter the department they want.
There are many merits of a department system. The school should not neglect the rights students can lose under a faculty system. In conclusion, the best system is a department system for the greater part of the students.

These days, faculty systems are being abolished. Keimyung University is planning to recruit new students through a department system from next year. However, faculty systems have many good points. The Gazette found some of the merits a faculty system can bring.
First, students can have more time to find what subject or what department is appropriate for them under the present faculty system. Considering most candidates for university entrance examinations are just busy in applying to universities, a faculty system can save them time to find their interest and to get information from professors or seniors until they actually choose their majors.
Second, students can broaden their knowledge for one or two years while they complete required cultural studies. One of the most exciting things university students can enjoy is that they can study and learn various subjects. While doing new studies, freshmen can feel the pleasure of studying various cultural subjects in their freshmen year.
Next, when students spend their first year in university, they tend to spend their time meaninglessly after escaping from the exam hell. However, under a faculty system, students must study hard to enter the departments they want. For this reason, a natural studying atmosphere can be created under a faculty system.
As seen above, a faculty system has many good points. Of course a department system has merits. Students can study their major subjects longer, and they can have more time to get along with their department seniors. However, in a faculty system students who have thought of the major studies they are going to choose can also study their major subjects from their freshman year. In addition, senior and junior relationships depend on the students’ own efforts regardless of whether they are in a faculty or department system. Therefore, the possible problem an under a faculty system can be solved or might not happen according to students’ own efforts.
In conclusion, a faculty system is a more desirable system in university.
