Benefits of the Gazette

When I first found out about the newspaper 3 years ago, I thought that Keimyung Universitiy was doing a fine job ensuring students are well exposed to English. Also, it gave me lots of opportunities to find out about university events and other good information for students. Nowadays, English is one of the most important things for students to learn and, through this newspaper, we can both learn English and find out useful information. In addition, the Keimyung Gazette gives good opportunities for international students who are not fully informed about school events because Korean is not their mother-language.

A few days ago, I read an article about an exchange student who came to Korea several years ago. It talked about the differences in culture of their country and ours, and also told us about other things that they experienced in and felt about Korea. Through articles like this, I can not only learn differences in cultures but also about other useful things within the society I am living in.

As you can see, the Gazette gives valuable information in English for both English-learning students like me and international students who are not fluent in Korean. I hope that the Gazette will provide us with other useful articles and through that I am willing to learn more about both English and life.

Spreading the word about the Gazette

I first saw the Gazette when I had class in the International Lounge in Bauer Hall. I was a sophomore and for more than 2 years I didn't know about the Gazette. The reason is not that we are not interested in the Gazette, but because we just don’t know about the newspaper. However, if someone opens the Gazette, I’m sure they will be satisfied.

I've seen many times, in sociology, social science students translating and explaining about Time magazine or another kind of English-language text. Usually, a professor provides a section of a newspaper and students explain it in class or study it, but I hardly ever see them use the Gazette. If the Gazette makes a better social section, then they might use the Gazette more.

Another way to increase awareness of the Gazette is through the conversation English class that all freshmen students must take. Usually both classes not only use a textbook, but also handouts from the professor. If the Gazette is used in class, more people will know about it and appreciate it.

Through the section “To Tip or Not to tip” by Prof. Kim, I had time to think about my experiences when I was working in the Crown Hotel. When they asked me to do something for them, for example, “Can you refill this coffee?” some of them gave me tips. I think that it is my job to be kind and serve my clients well, but clients should be allowed to tip if they want to.

Finally, I'm really glad to give my opinion about the Gazette, and for sure I'll continue to follow its development.
