(“Young World” is the slogan of Yeongwol-gun)

Yeongwol-gun is an area of culture with beautiful natural resources and cultural remains. It's located in southern Gangwon-do. I visited Yeongwol-gun from November 1 to 2. The maple leaves were awesome and still colorful even at the end of fall. Let's look around Yeongwol-gun's famous places: Seonam village, Cheongryeongpo, Gwanpungheon, and Jangneung.
Seonam village is popular because it's shaped like the Korean peninsula (Hanban-do). Seogang River's clean water flows around Seonam village. It is similar to the East Sea, the South Sea, and the West Sea.
The next places are Jangneung and Cheongryeongpo. These places are related to a sad story regarding Korea's 6th king in the Joseon Dynasty, Danjong. When he was 12, he became king. However, after only three years, Suyangdaegun, his uncle, took over the throne. In 1457, Danjong was banished from Cheongryeongpo and put to death in Gwanpungheon. His grave is in Jangneung. When I stood in front of Jangneung, I felt lonely and pity for the young King's short life.
After I toured Jangneung, I went to Cheongryeongpo, an outcrop of land that extends into Namhangang River. It is located about 3km west of the Yeongwol-gun. The east, north, and west sides of it are blocked by deep water, and the south is connected to the land. For that reason, Danjong called it 'Yukjigodo' (meaning lonely island on the land). In July 1998, the Korea Cultural Assets Preservation completed the excavation of Cheongryeongpo. You can reach Cheongryeongpo by ferry boat.

TIP: The shortest way to get Youngwol-gun, Gangwon-do from Daegu
Take an express bus from Dongdaegu Express Bus Terminal to Jecheon City, Chungcheongbuk-do. After you arrive in Jecheon, transfer to a bus to Yeongwol-gun. From Dongdaegu to Jecheon city takes about 2 hours and the cost is 14,400 won. From Jecheon city to Yeongwol-gun takes about 1 hour and the cost is 3,100 won.
