Why Do I Love You

Philosophical Love Story

Sometimes love is the most difficult thing but sometimes it is the easiest thing because it depends on our mind. Do you have someone in your mind? If so, why do you love him or her? The book, Why Do I Love You, doesn't answer the question directly. However, if you read this book, you can feel sympathy with the author about love and understand the meaning of love more than before.

The original title of Why Do I Love You was Essays in Love because the form of this book is an essay-writing style which helps you to understand the contents more realistically. Alain de Botton, an author who specializes in philosophy, describes the progress of love from his view as a philosopher. There are many lists of philosopher's wise sayings from people such as Aristotle, Plato, Kant, and so on. Even though this book is a philosophical novel, it is so interesting and seems to say that philosophy is not as difficult as people might think. His unique thinking and the way he describes his thinking comes easily into our mind. This book is Alain de Botton's first work, written when he was 25.

Why Do I Love You describes the progress of a love affair from the first kiss to argument and reconciliation, from intimacy and tenderness to the onset of anxiety and heartbreak. This book starts with the story of two young people, 'me' and Chloe. They meet on a flight, fall in love rapidly, and eventually come to love each other. They idealize their partner and confirm each other by loving the other. However, as we know, a loving emotion does not continue forever. Chloe loses the boiling loving emotion she had had before she fell in love with 'me'. 'Me' realizes the fact that his love came to an end and he attempts suicide only to come back to his ordinary life. Then, he meets Rachel in a party and he falls in love again.

Everyone goes through this succession of loving. When one loves someone, people assume that the world will move as he imagines. On the contrary, when one breaks up, he or she feels that the world will end. Fortunately, as the famous saying, "time is the best medicine," goes, he gradually forgets about what he suffered from his past love. This is the reason why we have to do our best and express our feeling without any hesitation when we love someone. Love can sometimes bring you a heartbreaking experience even though you did your best for the love. The most important thing is that your spirit can grow through that experience and your next love can be a more mature one than the previous one. If you want to think deep about the agony of love, reading chapter 10 of this book, titled 'Speaking Love', will be helpful to you.

In this chapter, you can find an impressive quotation: "When I took Chloe's hand and told her that I marshmallowed her. She seemed to understand perfectly what I wanted to say and answered that it was the sweetest thing she had ever heard before."

If you cherish someone in your heart, why don't you say "I marshmallow you" to him or her. Maybe he or she will perfectly understand what you are saying and this will be the start of a new love.
