My First Semester at Eastern Michigan University

At the end of April, my first semester at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) was over. I felt time flied like an arrow. I was studying finance at EMU. In this article, I would like to share a few interesting things that I have experienced here.

The first thing is the Daylight Saving Time. I still remember I had a hard time fitting myself to the time change. Most areas of the United States start at 2:00 am from the second Sunday in March. It begins from the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday of October. It means time will be reset one hour earlier than before. Resetting the time was a considerably big change for me. Actually, my morning class at 8 am started at 7 am. Isn't it shocking? However, the more shocking thing was that nobody fell asleep during the class. How much physical strength the American students have!

Secondly, I want to explain about the big size of America. When someone invites me to come to their house, I had to ask where their houses are; it took two or three hours to get to the parents of my friends’ house. What is worse, if the house is in another state, I couldn’t even imagine how many times I should take a car. However, it was so lucky that I met good room-mates and friends. We often hung out with one another, and I could also experience various American holidays by visiting their houses.

The last thing is about the terrible state of recycling. When I had a dinner at an eatery first, I was really shocked. The students were throwing out all their remaining food and plastic products such as bottles, forks, spoons, and everything they used for their dinner in the same trash box. There was no recycling. How much guilty I felt whenever I threw reusable trash out like them! I sometimes imagine what if American people recycle as Koreans do. It seemed that the most amounts of disposable products that I can use for my entire life might be spent here for a few years.

My days at EMU had a series of exciting events. I tried to enjoy my life at EMU by doing my best in everything. I am really glad that I got to have a chance to share my experience with the Gazette readers. In addition, I thank Keimyung University for giving me the chance to study here. From the beginning of May, I started the spring semester. Even though I have language problems, I have a firm belief that I can do everything well because I am one of the indomitable Keimyung People.
