Registering for Classes

When the period of registering for classes comes, students are pressed and confused in front of the computer. The drop/add period is the same. In addition, every faculty office and the Academic Administration Team become very busy with students' inquiries. The “Gazette” compared the way of registering in several universities in Daegu and found what students complain about. Our university's students register for classes for 6 days on the web page. Freshmen register for the first two days, and sophomores, juniors, and seniors register for the next four days. Students majoring in Humanities, Foreign Language and Literature, International Studies, Education, and five other faculties enroll for classes for the first two days of the four days, and then students majoring in Environment, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, and seven other faculties enroll for classes for the last two days. Students enter cultural classes and major classes on the first day and other classes on the second day.

In Kyungpook University, freshmen register first like our university. However, the students enroll for major classes for the first hour, and then register for others. In Yeungnam University, freshmen and sophomores enroll for courses on the first day, and then juniors and seniors enroll for courses on the next day. Students who didn't register for courses during the two days can enroll for classes on the last day. Daegu Catholic University is similar to Yeungnam University, but juniors and seniors register on the first two days, and then freshmen and sophomores register on the following two days.

There are some inefficient things in our university's way of registering for classes, compared with other universities. First, access time is very short compared with other universities. Students input an ID and a password and then enroll for classes on the registering web page within 5 minutes. When the five minutes passes, the system automatically logs off, and you have to input an ID and a password again. Many students complain that they are nervous and impetuous whenever they register for classes. Second, the units that students can change during the drop/add period are limited to six units. Kyungpook, Yeungnam, and Daegu Catholic University don't limit the number of units which students can modify, so our students have to be more careful in first registering. Third, students lack information on courses in selecting them. Many plans of lectures haven't been input before the registering period, so students have to ask other students for some information or even just choose by the title. However, in the last registering, almost all major classes except cultural classes' plans were input before the registering period, so complaints were reduced. The plan of a lecture is very important information when students register for classes because it shows the content of or information about the class. Students want to get the plans of lectures even though classes might be changed later, and if professors can't input plans, students want to get a brief introduction.

Another problem is that we don't know how many spaces are left in classes on the registering homepage. When students are rejected, they know that the class is full. Thus, most students complain that there is no system to show the spaces left. However, we can check this in the Academic Information System. The problem is that most students don't know this system. If you check this system, click the course information and class time and then you will see the spaces left. Why can't we find this system on the web page of registering like other universities? The Academic Administration Team said that the reason is to prevent an overload of the system. They said that if students use this system, this system will easily overload because many students will stay on the homepage for a long time. Our university should tell the time and place to use this system on the Internet or on the class schedule, in order for students to use this system actively.

The Academic Administration Team said, "Students are complaining about our university's way of registering, but we have carried this out until now without big problems. It seems inefficient to restrict the units to six when students change their classes, but it helps the staff of the Academic Administration Team to grasp all classes' information including the classes' professors or the number of students. Also five minutes of access time is suitable for our system. If access time is over five minutes, our system won't work. Five minutes is enough time to input classes on the Internet if students prepare the classes they want to register for before the term of registering for courses. Moreover, any university has the problem that the system of registering is overloaded because many students crowd the Internet during the time of registering for courses. To change the way of enrolling is difficult if you consider our university's overall task of administration because registering is carried out just twice year. We'll keep the way of registering for classes, but we always have an open attitude if there is a better method."

Yeungnam University's "free board" is very useful when students register. They freely share classes' information and make a plan together to change the classes. We also have a good place in Keimyung University's homepage, Bisa Gwangjang, like Yeungnam University. If students and the university actively try to use this board during the period of registering for classes, it will be useful to enroll for courses.
