The Office of Employment Support

If you go behind the old Bauer Hall toward the main gate of the school, you can see one building clinging to the old Bauer Hall but almost separate. On the building’s first floor, there is the Office of Employment Support. It has many programs to help students succeed in finding employment.

Main programs
*Employment Cafe: it is a consultation. Now, they are having individual consultations. But they will try group consultations in the near future. About 1000 students participated in individual consultations last year. They not only help to choose the students’ careers but also give encouragement and advice.
*Mock TOEIC and CAT TOEIC: it is held once a month free of charge.
*Publication of books related to employment: they publish books which summarize the points for successful employment.
*Vocational education: once a year, the Employment Support Team gives an opportunity to students who want to be flight attendants to participate in training, held under the sponsorship of Asiana Airlines. The students can experience a flight attendant’s duties.

Also, there are vocational seminars, employment lectures and education programs, receipt of applications for jobs and part time jobs online, and various camps related to employment.

In the present society, employment is very difficult even if you have many degrees. If you make good use of the Office of Employment Support’s programs, you can receive great help.

I interviewed the section chief of the office, Park Dong-seob. He said, “The support of the school for the office is positive. Our staff’s sense of duty and eagerness about student employment are also high. But students are indifferent to the office’s programs and even to their employment. It makes my heart hurt that they don’t have employment ready in advance. When the time of graduation comes, they usually regret it. Because of the online service, the proportion of students who use the programs in increasing, but the proportion is still very small. In Kyungpook National University’s case, participation of students in their Office of Employment Support’s programs is very high in comparison with our university. We need students to worry about and prepare for their dream. Anytime, the Office of Employment Support will help students.”He added, “We have made every effort to draw more students. To students who don’t know the office’s location, we let them come to the office for their mock TOEIC application in person after looking for the office’s location on the Internet. I also advertised and invited about 2400 students who attend my employment lecture. To students who don’t even know the office’s existence, we often gave notice of the programs on our school’s homepage and on a banner on campus. We also sometimes take an aptitude test in the middle of an employment lecture, just in case the lecture may become monotonous.”

He said that he did his best to attract student’s concern. He appealed to me, “If you have a better way to draw student’ concern, please let me know anytime.” He added, “We will keep holding programs and events, even though many students are indifferent. To strengthen the competitive power of students, we will give concern repeatedly and long time guidance through consultation, so the Employment Cafe will be revitalized. At first, an individual consultation like now will be held, and then we will attempt a group consultation.” But they have but one counselor, Park Dong-seob, who is the section chief of the office. To draw many students, the office will need more counselors than now. A more specific consultation plan is needed. An environment in which students can have an open mind and be familiar with the office easily must be made in the office. The staff needs to be a little more cheerful and kind than now to make a brighter mood. It will help the students to feel familiarity with the Office of Employment Support. If they have more active advertising with the best use of the staff’s passion and sense of duty, someday, the office will be crowded with students.

The majority of students avoid opening their dreams, records, backgrounds, and grades to other people, even to counselors. To self-develop, disclosing oneself properly is needed. Don’t be shy about disclosing your weakness to counselors. When you reveal yourself, counselors can help you. The Office of Employment Support will be your good counselor. Don’t hope that luck will be given to you by a happy accident. To win success, looking for the key in person is needed. The Office of Employment Support will be your excellent helper to look for your key. Students! Have awareness and go out to look for your key!
