There are 55 disabled parking spaces out of a total of 1,222 spaces on campus. Ramps are located in every building except for Bauer Hall. There are elevators in Dongsan Library, Haengso Museum, and the Keimyung Techno Park. On the campus there are 22 disabled toilets among a total of 257.
The Faculty of Music & Performing Arts’ new building on Seong-so campus will have a ramp at the front entrance. There will also be a sloped curb between the road and the footpath, an elevator inside, and ridges on the ground for the visually disabled to find their way to the entrance.
Keimyung University complies with all laws and regulations regarding the gradients of campus roads and th number of disabled seats in libraries be at least one percent of the total. In Dongsan Library, there are 64 seats for the disables among a total 5660 seats. Go Gang-min, a freshmen from the Faculty of Engineering, said, “I don't have big problems except going up the stairs and using university facilities. I don't have any complaints because of scholarship and Workstudy opportunities.”
Keimyung University doesn’t have any special selection criteria for the admission of disabled students, but Keimyung University assists disabled students by assigning first floor classrooms, preparing special desks, issuing disabled parking stickers, and providing 2 helpers for each disabled student.
Daegu University and Cheju National University are good examples of universities with good facilities and services for the disabled. From June last year, Cheju National Universityhas enlarged its helper programs to include helpers for studying, writing and campus living. To improve the environment for the disabled, Cheju National University has various programs including the Dasoni Centerwhich has a braille monitor and a wireless voice service for the visually disabled. Daegu University has special buses that are equipped with boarding ramps and a braille library.
Lee Yo-seop, a freshman from the Faculty of Social Sciences, said, “I know that the Student Counseling Center in Bauer Hall has a special program for the disabled, but many disabled people have problems accessing it because there aren’t any ramps. If the center moves to Dongsan Library, it could be more easily accessed.”
