Keimyung Hanhakchon (Hanhakchon) is a cultural space located on the Seongseo campus where visitors can experience traditional Korean culture firsthand. It is home to Joseon-era buildings such as hanoks and sarangchae, and offers a variety of experience programs such as a hanbok experience, tea ceremony, and traditional craft workshops.
Hanhakchon, built in May 2004 to commemorate the 105th anniversary of the founding of Keimyung University, faithfully recreates the architecture and living culture of the Joseon Dynasty. Working with Korean experts to restore traditional hanoks and surrounding gardens, Hanhakchon was initially operated as a space for student education and research, and has since expanded into a traditional cultural experience for the local community and visitors.
Hanhakchon is composed of the Keimyung Seodang, which is used as an educational space, a hanok, or a nobleman's house named Keijung-heon, and a garden. The Keimyung Seodang was built based on the form of old language schools, such as Yeongju Sosu Seowon, Angang Oksan Seowon, Andong Dosan Seowon, and Daegu Dodong Seowon. This area also includes an educational space where the master teaches his students, a resting space, a traditional space for drinking tea, a space where the students live, study, and relax, and a space where the master lives normally. Keijung-heon is categorized into spaces used for women’s living quarters, where the adults of the household reside, entertain guests, educate young children, and the stables. Finally, the accompanying garden is a reproduction of a traditional Korean garden concept, with the layout and form of each landscape.
Hanokchon hosts cultural experiences and a variety of academic events, including seminars and exhibitions. Hanhakchon is a unique space that fuses traditional Korean culture with modern studies, providing visitors with a cultural experience and inspiration.
