Collapse accident due to poor construction

2022.03.11 09:13:58

On Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at 3:46 p.m., most of the 23rd to 38th floors of an apartment building collapsed. The Hyundai Development Company was responsible for building the Hwajeong IPARK Complex 2 in Hwajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju when it collapsed. The collapsed section of 16 floors is approximately 78,000㎡. Fortunately, there is an evacuation space and machine room on the 23rd floor, which prevented further collapse thanks to its harder structure than other places.

There are several reasons why the building collapsed. The tower crane on the roof of the building collapsed first, colliding with the outer walls of the 38-story apartment building under construction, causing the collapse. From a month or two ago, the contractor pressured the site to go faster the construction period. Then, it was piled up one layer every four to five days, not two to three weeks, which is the general construction period in winter. An official at the site said, "As we are chased by the construction period to meet the moving-in schedule, the rapid construction of the building without following the most basic process seems to be the cause of the collapse." In addition, he explained that many people pointed out that there was a problem with the apartment design itself. Architecture experts also responded that a combination of factors such as strong winds, poor construction, poor management, and design problems all contributed to the collapse. Six workers who were working at the time of the accident were crushed by the debris and missing. A search was carried out, and the last missing person was found on February 7, the 28th day after the accident. Eventually, all six people were confirmed to have died.
HDC Hyundai Development Company issued an apology near the accident countermeasure headquarters at around 9 a.m. on the January 12, the day after the accident. It also announced that it would temporarily suspend work at all 65 sites nationwide for two days on January 13 and 14 and conduct special safety inspections. However, some sites continued construction. This shows that the contractor had a complacent response, such as a formal apology, excessive work, and false explanation. In response, the families of the missing people felt frustrated by the contractor's handling of the incident and criticized the contractor for only prioritizing future business preparations.

The national government has also established measures to revitalize public interest reporting to prevent damage caused by such poor construction. Many people are also anxious as the collapse caused by poor construction has caused human casualties. Therefore, fundamental measures for poor construction should be prepared as soon as possible.
