Yinka Shonibare’s art works were exhibited at Daegu Art Museum from May 30 to October 18. Yinka Shonibare was born in London in 1962 as a Nigerian-English person. He suffered from a rare disease which gave him a disability, but he still studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and Goldsmiths College in London. He was also awarded the decoration of Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2010. He was raised in white society, so he usually deals with art works about Euro-centrism and racism. His art works represent modern African art.

The two fundamental themes Shonibare’s art works are “duality of history” and “cultural hybridism.” Shonibare found that written history has distortions, and this causes results such as a distortion of people’s world view and values. Despite such distortions, Shonibare hopes people view the world as a resplendent garden. He uses various media like sculptures, installations, films, and photography to create his own unique voice.

Daegu Art Museum’s official site offers English, Chinese, and Japanese translation. You can also see images of his art works in advance. The official site is http://www.daeguartmuseum.org
