Globalizing Korean Studies

34 principals and vice principals of American middle and high schools which offer SAT II Korean were invited by the Keimyung University Academy of Korean Studies and had a workshop for a week, from July 3 to 9.

This program had lectures on the development of Korean, understanding Korean history, and the Korean education system, and the principals and vice principals explored Korean historical sites. They also watched a taekwondo show and Korean ballet and listened to Korean traditional music.

Keimyung University is associated with the Foundation for Korean Language and Culture in the USA. The foundation has invited American middle and high school principals and vice principals to present education training programs to expand Korean classes in middle and high schools across the United States once a year since 2000. Through this kind of program, the Foundation for Korean Language and Culture tries to induce Americans interest in and support of Korean education.Keimyung University has belonged to the CCIS (College Consortium of International Studies), which consists of 150 colleges in the USA, since 1997. Many foreigners come to Keimyung University to study Korean studies. Also Keimyung University runs the Korean Studies International Summer Session and the Korean Language and Culture Experience Program.

The president of Keimyung University, Jin-woo Lee, said, “Hereafter, having various international programs and Korean language training programs in Keimyung University for American students, I expect to make and expand Korean classes in middle and high school in the USA. We are dedicated to supporting the internationalization and globalization of Korean Studies.”
